How to replace the speed sensor

Some symptoms of a bad speed time sensor include the Check Engine light and poor performance. It is also known as the crankshaft position sensor.

The speed sync sensor, also known as the crankshaft position sensor, is one of the many sensors your car's computer uses to input data. The computer receives information about the engine and outside temperature, as well as vehicle speed and, in the case of a speed sensor, engine speed. The computer adjusts the fuel mixture and timing based on this input. The speed sync sensor is mounted directly on the engine block and uses a magnetic field to read the gear on the crankshaft to determine which cylinder should fire and how fast the engine is spinning. A faulty speed sync sensor can cause issues such as a glowing Check Engine light, poor performance, and even starting the engine without starting.

Part 1 of 2: Removing the speed time sensor

Necessary materials

  • Motor oil - any grade will do
  • Fault code reader/scanner
  • Screwdriver - flat/phillips
  • Sockets/Ratchet

Step 1: Locate the speed sync sensor.. The speed sensor is bolted to the engine. It can be on either side of the engine or in front next to the crankshaft pulley.

It is usually secured with one screw, but may have two or three.

Step 2 Remove the sensor. After making sure that the key is in the off position, disconnect the sensor electrical connector and unscrew the mounting bolt. The sensor should just slide out.

  • Functions: Most sensor housings are made of plastic, which can become brittle over time. If the sensor is located in the cylinder block and does not pull out easily, use two small flathead screwdrivers to pry the sensor evenly.

Step 3: Install the new sensor. The sensor may have an o-ring if installed in the block. Apply some oil to the seal with your fingertip before inserting the sensor into the block.

Fix the sensor and connect the connector.

  • Attention: Some vehicles can clear any trouble codes by themselves after installing a new sensor and starting the engine. Others cannot. If you don't have a trouble code reader, you can try disconnecting the negative battery terminal for 10-30 minutes. If that doesn't work, you can visit your local auto parts store and they can clear the code for you.
