How to Replace the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) Valve

The positive crankcase ventilation valve reduces emissions in modern engines. Signs of a failed PCV valve include oil leaks and poor engine performance.

A positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve is built into current production engines to help reduce emissions. When an internal combustion engine is running, it creates pressure inside the engine through several different factors. This pressure must be dealt with in an environmentally friendly way. This is done by recirculating the pressurized vapors back to the engine, where the vapors can be burned off by the heat generated during the combustion process. If your PCV valve is defective, it will cause oil leakage and poor engine performance.

Method 1 of 1: Replace the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve

Necessary materials

  • needle nose pliers
  • Pliers
  • Replacing the PCV valve
  • Screwdriver Set
  • Set of wrenches

Step 1: Locate the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve.. Check the valve cover on the engine. The PCV valve is usually similar to the one pictured above and has a hose running from the PCV valve to the intake assembly or throttle body.

Step 2: Remove the PCV valve. This is most commonly achieved by pulling the PCV valve out of the valve cover by hand and then retracting the hose.

Some of these will be screwed into the valve cover and you will need to remove the hose before unscrewing the PCV valve to remove it.

Step 3: Compare the replacement PCV valve with the valve you removed.. They must be the same type, the same size and the same type of hose connection.

You should hear a rattling sound when shaking the replacement PCV valve. This is due to the fact that there is a control ball inside the valve, which must be able to move freely.

Step 4: Install the Replacement PCV Valve. You should be able to simply cancel the removal procedure.

Either reattach the PCV hose and insert the replacement element back into the valve cover, or thread the replacement element into the valve cover and then reinstall the hose.

The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve directs combustion pressure in the crankcase back to the intake manifold or intake tract through a hose or tube. This is an important feature that will greatly affect the performance of your engine if it is not working properly.

If at any point you feel that you can manually replace the PCV valve in your car, contact a professional specialist, such as those available at AvtoTachki. AvtoTachki has trained and certified repair technicians who can come to your home or work and perform repairs for you.
