How to replace the blade of a pocket knife?
Content
You can tell if a pocket knife blade needs to be replaced by looking for any of the following three signs:
Your blade may appear rusty or dull.
The cutting edge of your blade may have developed nicks and pits that no longer produce a smooth cut.
Your blade may even break completely.
Since the blades of pocket knives wear out and need to be replaced, there is no need to spend time sharpening the blade; just replace it. Most pocket knives come with up to five replacement blades so you don't have to buy new ones right away.
Note: The replacement process may vary slightly for different penknife models, so for this guide we have chosen the most common type. If your pocket knife's blade replacement procedure is different, you can always find instructions in the box it came in or on your manufacturer's website.
This guide will show you how to change blades on a penknife with a sliding replacement system where the blade is pulled out of the end of the knife without having to open the case.
Step 1: Find the quick release mechanism for your knife.First you will need to find the quick release mechanism for your knife. A look at the manufacturer's recommendations should tell you where it is.
On this knife, the quick release mechanism is located close to the top edge of the liner, next to the blade.
Step 2 - Widen the BladeIf your knife has a retractable model, fully extend the blade.
Step 3 - Engage the quick release mechanismIn this case, simply press and hold the button on the insert to release the blade from its slot.
Step 4 - Remove the BladeGently grasp the blade between your thumb and forefinger, taking care not to press on the tip or cutting edge.
Now simply pull the blade outward from the knife in a smooth motion until it is free.
Step 5 - Replace BladeEngage the quick release mechanism again and insert one end of the replacement blade into the blade body (from the end of the knife inwards). Do this so that the notches of the blade are facing up and the cutting edge is facing down.
Keep pressing until the trigger clicks into place - you can now release the button and use your knife as usual. |
