How to replace the AC control module

The air conditioning control module is the brain of the entire system. It is an electronic control of the internal functions of the air conditioner, such as fan speed, temperature and ventilation from which air is drawn, as well as control of the air conditioner compressor and mechanical system. It can even measure the temperature of the air outside and in the cabin to regulate the temperature of the air in the climate control system.

In this article, we will only talk about replacing the air conditioning control module, which has already been diagnosed and found to be faulty. If the A/C control module has not been diagnosed, the problem must be determined before any repairs can be made. This article explains how to remove and replace the most common AC control modules.

Part 1 of 3: Preparing for the Repair

Step 1: Check if the A/C control module is defective.. The first step in this process is to confirm that the A/C control module is the source of the problem.

The most common faults include an intermittent air conditioning system or incorrect air distribution. AC control modules fail over time as the vehicle ages.

Step 2. Determine the location of the A/C control module.. The A/C control module is an assembly with temperature controls, fan speed control, and temperature readings.

Before any repair, make sure that the new part matches the old one. This build is bigger than it looks as most of the block is hidden by the dashboard.

Part 2 of 3: Replacing the A/C Control Module

Necessary materials

  • Basic set of sockets
  • New AC control module
  • User's Guide
  • plastic set

Step 1: Remove the dashboard trim.. The dashboard trim hides mounting brackets for components such as the radio and A/C control module.

It must be removed in order to gain access to the A/C control module.

On some vehicles, this trim can be gently removed using plastic trim tools. In other vehicles, the trim may be bolted on and require removal of the lower instrument panels and center console.

Refer to your owner's manual for the exact procedure for your make and model and remove the dashboard trim panel.

Step 2: Remove mounting bolts. After removing the dashboard cover, the A/C control module mounting bolts should be visible.

These bolts will come off, but don't pull out the block just yet.

Step 3: Disconnect the electrical connector. With the mounting bolts removed, we will not pull out the air conditioning control module.

It will only get to the point where the electrical connections are visible. Support the AC control module by unplugging the connectors. Pay attention to where each connector goes and put them in a simple place.

The old A/C control module should now pop out and can be set aside.

Step 4: Install the New A/C Control Module. First, take a look at the new A/C control module, making sure it matches the one that was removed.

Insert the air conditioning control unit into its socket, large enough to connect the electrical connections. Connect all connectors removed from the old unit. When all wires are connected, insert the A/C control module all the way into the dashboard.

Step 5: Install all bolts and trim. Now loosely install all the mounting bolts.

After everything is installed and the control module sits correctly, they can be tightened. Now you can install the overlay on the dashboard. Either bolt it on or make sure it snaps into place properly by following the method you used to remove it.

Part 3 of 3: Health check

Step 1: Checking the work. Inspect the finished work and make sure that there are no extra parts or bolts in it.

Make sure all wires are connected back during reassembly. Finally, make sure the A/C control module is installed correctly.

Step 2: Perform the first AC function test. Finally, we will turn on the car and set the car to the coldest setting and turn on the air conditioner.

The air conditioner should turn on and work as intended. Air must exit from the selected vents and airflow must be uniform through all vents.

Now that you've replaced the A/C control module, you can relax and enjoy the cool air that makes driving in the summer months and hot weather much more bearable. This may be a simple installation, or it may require the removal of most of the dash. If at any point you have questions, be sure to ask your mechanic for quick and detailed advice.
