How to replace the hood support legs
The hood struts or lift support support your car's hood when you access the engine bay. A faulty rack is a safety issue.
The hood support supports the hood of the car. This allows you to access the engine compartment without lifting the hood with your hands or using a support. Faulty hood pillars can be both dangerous and annoying as they can cause the hood to fall on your head.
Part 1 of 2: Removing the old hood support legs
To replace the hood support legs safely and effectively, you'll need a few basic tools.
Necessary materials
- flat screwdriver
- New hood supports
- Bonnet support (wood or pipe)
- Protective gloves
- Ratchet and sockets
- Repair manuals (optional) you can buy them online through Chilton, or Autozone provides them for free on certain makes and models.
- Safety glasses
Step 1: Support the hood with a brace. Open the hood and support it with a prop such as a piece of wood or a pipe.
Alternatively, you can ask a friend to help you and keep the hood open for you.
Step 2: Remove the hood support pins.. Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the support post retainers.
Step 3: Unscrew the fasteners. Remove the mounting bolts that connect the rack to the body.
Usually, a ratchet and a head of the appropriate size are used for this.
Step 4: Remove the Stand. Remove the strut from the ball joint and remove the strut from the vehicle.
Part 2 of 2: Installing the new hood support
Step 1: Install the New Rack. Install the new rack in place and loosely install the mounting hardware, but do not tighten it.
Step 2: Slide the pole onto the ball joint.. Position the strut over the ball joint and push with your finger until it snaps into place.
Step 3: Tighten the Fasteners. Tighten the fasteners until tight.
The hood strut replacement should now be complete. However, if you'd rather have a professional do the job for you, AvtoTachki certified mechanics offer a qualified hood strut replacement service.
