How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Iowa

Owning your own car is an exciting and proud moment. In the United States, what is known as a certificate of ownership or ownership of the vehicle is issued to you as proof of ownership. In fact, this is a small pink piece of paper on which a number of important details are indicated. This title features the license plate, VIN number of the vehicle, contact information of the registered owner (address and name), deposit holder and more.

This title should always be kept in a safe place at home (not in the car), but accidents can happen and you may find that searching for the title is in vain. If you live in Iowa and have lost your title, it's been damaged, or worse, it's been stolen, it's important to get a duplicate title. The right approach to business ensures that you receive it as soon as possible.

When applying for a duplicate title in Iowa, it must be done in person at the local IA DMV office. This duplicate title will be provided to you if you have damaged or lost your original title. You can do the following:

  • First, complete the Iowa Vehicle Title Replacement Application (Form 411033). This form can be found online and at the DMV.

  • The form will then need to be sent to the county treasury office where the title to your vehicle was originally issued.

  • There is a $25 fee to get a duplicate title.

Keep in mind that if your vehicle is still in a lien, the owner of the lien must apply for a duplicate. If they wish, they may file a notarized revocation of the security interest (Form 411168) with the county treasury office.

In addition, if there are several owners of the vehicle, each of them must put his signature on the application.
