How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Minnesota

If you happen to own your car, the proof of this is your ownership of the car. Maybe you've been thinking about selling your car, maybe transferring ownership to your teenage child, or maybe you're thinking about moving out of state. In all these cases, you will need a vehicle passport. So what happens when you go after him only to find that he is lost? Some people have even had the bad experience of having their car stolen. Don't worry as you can get a duplicate vehicle relatively easily.

In Minnesota, you can apply for a duplicate vehicle in one of two ways - in person or by mail. We will describe the steps associated with each.

  • The parties that may apply for a duplicate vehicle title deed are the owner(s), the lien holder and/or the legal representative of the vehicle owner.

In person * You will need to start by completing an Application for Duplicate Title, Registration, Taxi or Bond Card (Form PS2067A).

  • The form requires your driver's license number and your signature.

  • Fill in the make and model of your vehicle, as well as the license plate.

  • All of this information can then be sent to your local Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) office.

  • There is a $8.25 fee for a duplicate title and then a $10 registration fee.

By mail

  • If you choose to apply by mail, you will still need to complete the same form as before (Form PS2067A) and include the same payment as above.

  • The form and payment can be sent to:
