How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Car in New York

Do you have plans to sell the car in the future? How about transferring ownership, perhaps transferring it to one of your children when they turn 16? In order to do any of these, you need to own the vehicle. What happens when you go to get your license for a car and realize you've either lost it or it's been stolen? While it's definitely relevant, it's not something out of the ordinary. That's why you'll be able to take the steps to duplicate your vehicle.

In New York State, a duplicate vehicle title deed is available through the New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). DMV has made the process as easy and fast as possible so you can get what you need and hit the road. You have the option to apply in person, by mail, or online, whichever is most convenient for you.

Personally

  • If you choose to personally apply for a duplicate vehicle, you will need to start by completing the Duplicate Title Application (Form MV-902). You will also need an ID.

  • Take all of this information to your local New York State DMV.

  • You will have to pay a fee of $20 for a duplicate car.

By mail

  • To apply by mail, you will still need a photocopy of ID and a completed Form MV-902. Please note that the $20 fee must be deposited in the form of a check.

  • Information can be sent by mail:

  • If you are in a hurry to get a duplicate car, you can send the package to:

Online

  • Perhaps the easiest way to apply for a duplicate is to do it online. Just visit the NY DMV website and follow the instructions.
