How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Car in Rhode Island

When it comes to your car, one of the most important documents you have is the title to the car. This is proof that you own your vehicle and allows you to transfer ownership and sell your vehicle. Too often, however, this title seems to be missing. Maybe you just moved in, maybe your car is many years old and you just can't remember where you put it. Under any circumstances, the title may be lost. Not only is it lost, but in some cases it can even be stolen.

In Rhode Island, you can get a duplicate of your vehicle title deed if it has been damaged, stolen, or lost. A duplicate is issued by the Rhode Island Motor Vehicle Division. The state requires any vehicle made in 2001 or newer to have a car title. Here's a look at the steps you can take to get a duplicate. Keep in mind that the title will only be issued to the owner.

  • To process a duplicate title, you will need to visit the Pawtucket DMV as this is the only office where this can be done. Pawtucket DMV title office address:

  • You will need to complete an Application for Title (TR-2/TR-9) and have it notarized.

  • Please bring proper ID, proof of residency, and a letter of release if you had one in the vehicle.

  • The cost of a duplicate car is $51.50.
