How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Car in North Carolina

Title of the vehicle is a very important document. This is your legal proof that you are the registered owner of your vehicle. Why is it so important? Well, if you have any plans to sell your car or transfer ownership, you need to have ownership of the car. It happens in life, things are lost, and sometimes even stolen. So what happens if that item that's missing is your car? That's when it's time to apply for a duplicate car.

In the state of North Carolina, you can go through this process through the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. The process has been created to be smooth and fast, so it's not stressful for you. Here are the steps involved in this process.

Personally

  • The procedure can be carried out in person by visiting the local branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles. Start by filling out an Application for issuing a duplicate (form МВР-4), which must be notarized.

  • You will also need your valid driver's license and your VIN number.

  • There is a $15 fee for a duplicate vehicle. This fee can be paid in person by check, money order or cash.

By mail

  • Once again, you will need to complete the MVR-4 form and you will need to provide your VIN number.

  • There is a $15 fee for a duplicate name.

  • Your information may be mailed to the address provided on the form.
