How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Indiana

Without ownership of the car, you will be in a difficult position if you decide to sell the car or trade it in for a new one. The same applies to moving out of Indiana - you can't register it without a title. However, titles are easily lost. They are also easily damaged and can be stolen. If you find yourself in this situation, don't worry. The answer is to get a duplicate title for your vehicle. It's actually very easy to do in Indiana.

There are four ways to get a duplicate Indiana title. You can do this online, by mail, at your local BMV office or through a certified BMV partner. Regardless of which option you choose, there are a few steps you need to follow.

Before you can apply for a duplicate title, you will need the following:

  • A valid form of photo ID. Indiana accepts a wide range of options, including a state-issued driver's license, work ID, military ID, bank card (with photo), and more.
  • Vehicle identification. This could be your vehicle registration, VIN number, and more.
  • Form of release from bail if there is a pledgor.

Note that any form of identifier used must be currently valid.

To apply by mail:

In addition to the information above, anyone applying for a duplicate title by mail will be required to:

  • Complete Form 44049 (Application for Certificate of Ownership)
  • Include $8 payment

  • Submit documents and other information (including copies of your ID and vehicle information) to this address:
