How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Kansas

For those who own a car, they have a document confirming this ownership. It is extremely important to keep this title in a safe place, which usually does not mean that it should be kept in your vehicle. If disaster strikes and you lose ownership of your car, it gets stolen, or it gets damaged, it's natural to feel stressed. The good news is that with a small amount of paperwork, you can get a duplicate vehicle.

If you would like to apply for a duplicate vehicle in Kansas, you can do so by fax, mail, or in person by visiting your local Kansas County Treasury. Here are the required steps.

  • When applying by fax, you must first complete an Application for Duplicate/Protected/Reformed Ownership (Form TR-720B). After it is completed, you can fax it to the Kansas Office of Registration and Registration at (785) 296-2383.

  • When applying by mail for a Duplicate Title, you must complete the Application for Duplicate/Protected/Reissued Title (TR-720B Form), complete the $10 check, and then mail it to:

  • If you prefer to apply in person, you can do so at the Kansas County Treasury. You will need an Application for Duplicate/Provision/Re-Title (form TR-720B), your vehicle make, vehicle year, VIN, current odometer reading, and owner's name. The fee for a lost title is $10.

It should be remembered that the title must be issued within 40 days. Also, if the vehicle already has a mortgage, you will not be able to get a duplicate title. You will need to get a bail release first.
