How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Massachusetts

As the owner of the vehicle, you have a document proving that the vehicle belongs to you and that you are the registered owner. Over time, this name can get lost, damaged, or even stolen. It can be quite scary when you realize it's gone, but fear not as there are a few easy steps you can follow to get a duplicate title.

In Massachusetts, this process has become smooth and fast. The goal is to make it easier for you to get the forms and information you need. You will apply for a duplicate through the Massachusetts Motor Registry. You can do this in one of three ways, as we will explain below.

Personally

  • If you choose to apply in person, you must first complete the Application for a Duplicate Title Deed (Form T20558). Once this is done, you can file it in person with your local vehicle registry (RMV). Keep in mind that the form will ask for your current odometer reading.

By mail

  • If you choose to apply by mail, please complete the same form as mentioned above and then mail it to:

Online

  • If you are looking for a quick and easy way to apply, you can do so online. For this method, you will need a current odometer reading, driver's license number, and VIN number.

It usually takes about 10 days after processing to receive the title, no matter which application method you choose. For more information about replacing a lost or stolen vehicle in Massachusetts, visit the State Department of Motor Vehicles website.
