How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Maine

Title is what proves that you are the rightful owner of your car. If you own a car, it is important that you also have ownership of the car. In doing so, various things can happen and your title can be damaged, destroyed, lost or even stolen, leaving you wondering what can you do about it? The good news is that if you live in Maine, you can apply for a duplicate title for the reasons above. This is done through the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).

Before you decide to apply for a duplicate title, it is important to find out if you need one. In Maine, any vehicle, motorcycle with a 300cc engine. cm and above and trailers over 3,000 pounds manufactured in 1995 or newer require a title. Keep in mind that up to two copyright holders and the owner can request a duplicate title. Ownership automatically passes to the first copyright holder unless you request otherwise.

Here are the steps you need to take.

  • You can apply for a duplicate title online and simply follow the instructions.

  • A duplicate title can also be submitted in person or by mail. If you choose any of these steps, you will need to complete and sign an Application for a Duplicate Title (Form MVT-8). You must also complete the Release of Bond (Form MBT-12). Be sure to take the fee with you, which is $33. If you are applying by mail, you can send it by check.

  • If you would like to send information by mail, the address for sending is:
