How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Michigan

We are responsible for the safety of many important documents, one of them is the ownership of your car. This piece of paper verifies that you are the registered owner of your vehicle, which is very important if you plan to sell it, transfer ownership, or register your vehicle in another state. Even with the best intentions, life happens and you can lose this car, damage it or even steal it. If any of this happened, you will be able to apply for a duplicate title to be sent.

In Michigan, the process is relatively simple. Here are the required steps.

  • Locate the Secretary of State (SOS) branch near you so you can come in person and receive the Michigan Vehicle Title Statement (Form TR-11L).

  • Make sure you have ID when you visit an SOS office, your state ID or driver's license are acceptable forms of ID.

  • Be sure to bring the fee, which is $15 for a duplicate title.

  • As for the timing, it usually takes about 10 days to send the form to you after processing.

  • Sometimes you may find yourself in a situation where you need a title quickly. If so, there are several SOS branches that offer "instant clearance services". These provide the titles of the same day. Just be sure to call ahead to make sure you qualify for the process.

  • Please note that all owners must sign the form and attend in person with proper identification. The Appointment of Agent form may be used if not all owners can be present.
