How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Mississippi
No matter how hard you try, no matter how well you take care of your car, something can still go wrong. If you lost or misplaced your vehicle, or it was stolen, this causes a problem. Your ownership of the vehicle is what proves that you are the registered owner of the vehicle, and is required if you want to sell, transfer ownership, or even register your vehicle in another state. It is clear that this is a document that simply cannot be dispensed with.
The state of Mississippi allows for several reasons to obtain a duplicate title. Here are the requirements set by the Mississippi Department of Revenue (DOR).
- The name has been destroyed
- Title has been corrupted
- Title has been stolen
- The name has been garbled
- Title is illegible
- If you never received original ownership of the vehicle from the lien holder or DOR
To apply for a duplicate vehicle, you can do so in person or by mail.
Personally
Visit your local MS DOR office to complete the Title Replacement Application (Form 78-006).
Make sure the fee is included, which is $9.
The process usually takes about 14 days.
By mail
- Complete all of the above steps and send the information to:

Additional options
There are a few other options that should be mentioned, such as leaving your payment and application with the Mississippi Tax Office. There is also a "Fast Track Title" program that will process the title within 72 hours. Be aware that it's a bit more expensive as it's $9 plus an additional $39 fast track fee. This application can be sent to:
