How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Montana

After working so hard to pay for your car, your title to the car is that piece of paper that proves you are the registered owner. This title gives you the opportunity to sell your car, if you decide to transfer ownership and the ability to register it in another state. Because it's just a piece of paper, it's not uncommon for it to get damaged, lost, or even stolen. In these cases, it is important to take the necessary steps to obtain a duplicate header.

If you live in Montana, the Montana Motor Vehicle Department's (MVD) Property Registry Office handles vehicle duplication issues. In this office, you can get a duplicate title if you satisfy one of the following reasons:

  • There has been a change of ownership
  • you changed your name
  • There are errors in the title
  • Change of your address
  • Damaged Vehicle, Stolen Vehicle or Lost Vehicle

You can apply in person or by mail, whichever is more convenient for you. Here are the required steps.

Personally

  • Go to your local Montana Registry Office to obtain an application for a duplicate title deed (Form MV7).

  • Complete a Statement of Fact (Form MV100) if you require a title change due to a name change.

  • Get $12 Commission

By mail

  • Follow all the same steps as above and then send the information to:
