How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Nebraska

A car passport may seem like a small thing, but it is actually a very important piece of paper. This title proves that you are the registered owner of your vehicle. This is important if you are considering selling your vehicle, transferring ownership, or planning to move to another state. It is important to keep the ownership of the car in a safe place, preferably not in the car, but even with your best efforts, something can happen. If you've lost ownership of your car or it's been stolen, it's important to get a replacement as soon as possible.

If you live in Nebraska, duplicate vehicle licenses are available from the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). You may legally replace a name if it has been damaged, lost, destroyed or stolen. To get a duplicate title, collect all the signatures that were on the original title as they must also sign the application. If the form is notarized, you will need proof of identity. Here are the required steps.

  • To get started, download and print the Nebraska Duplicate Certificate of Title Application (Form RV-707a). If you prefer, you can pick up this form in person at the Nebraska County Treasurer's office.

  • The form must be completed and notarized. Please note that if the vehicle is in a lien, the name of the holder of the lien must also be on the application you fill out. You will also need the year, make and model of the car, VIN and document number.

  • The cost of a duplicate title is $14, which can be paid by credit card, money order, online, or personal check.
