How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Ohio

Quick, could you tell me where your car is stored? How about checking if it really exists? Too often people lose this rather important piece of paper, or worse, it gets stolen. Your title to a vehicle is a legal document that shows that you are the registered owner of the vehicle. You will need this title if you ever plan to sell your car or transfer ownership. So what happens when it goes missing? The good news is that you can apply for a duplicate vehicle.

In Ohio, this duplicate is available through the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV). The state requires all Ohio drivers to have physical proof of Ohio ownership. Reasons for obtaining a duplicate title are damage, loss, illegibility or theft. Keep in mind that this process can be done by the bondholder or the title holder. Look at this process here.

  • Go to your local title deed (Ohio Court Clerk's Office) to obtain an application(s) for a vehicle title deed (BMV Form 3774). When you complete it, you can skip the first section as it will not apply to your request.

  • When you submit the form, you will also be required to provide a current vehicle registration and proper identification.

  • There is a $15 fee for a duplicate name.
