How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Texas

It's never nice to lose something important, or worse, lose something important. So what if this item is the name of your car? Ownership of a car is what proves you own it and gives you the right to transfer ownership or sell it. The good news is that if your title goes missing or is stolen, you can have your car duplicated.

For those who live in Texas, this duplicate vehicle can be obtained through the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). To apply for a duplicate title, all holders must sign the application. If your car is in a lien, the application must actually be submitted by the holder of the lien. You have the option to apply for a duplicate car in person or by mail. Here is a look at the relevant steps.

Personally

  • Start by completing an application for a certified copy of the title deed (Form VTR-34).

  • Take your form, along with a valid photo ID, to your local service center regional office.

  • There is a $5.45 fee to issue a duplicate vehicle, which can be paid by money order, cashier's check, check, or cash.

By mail

  • If you decide to choose the postal route, you will still need to start by completing Form VTR-34.

  • A photocopy of a valid photo ID is included in the package.

  • Send the $2 commission as a cashier's check, money order, or cheque.

  • You can send this package to your regional service center office.
