How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in Virginia

Losing things is nothing new for most people. It is difficult to keep track of our various things, and in addition to losing them, unfortunately, sometimes something is stolen. Your car is one of those items that are notorious for being lost or even stolen. Unfortunately, it's a pretty big deal when it goes away because it's proof that you own your car. This is important if you are using your car as collateral for any kind of loan, if you want to transfer ownership of it, or if you are trying to sell it.

In Virginia, if you lose or have your vehicle title stolen, you can get a duplicate vehicle from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). They made the process very easy so it shouldn't be a big challenge. You can apply in person or online for a duplicate title. Here's a look at the steps.

Personally

  • Begin by completing the Application for Additional and Transferable Bonds or Replacement and Replacement Titles (VSA Form 66).

  • Bring this completed form to your local DMV Customer Service Center. Be sure to also provide information about the bond, if any, your social security number, photo ID or your license, and proof of registration.

  • You will need to pay $10 for the title.

Online

  • If you decide to apply for a duplicate title online, you will need a few pieces of information. You will need to enter your date of birth, your customer number, your PIN, and there is a $10 fee that can be paid with a credit card.
