How to Replace a Lost or Stolen Vehicle in South Dakota

Are you thinking about selling your car? Perhaps you are considering transferring ownership to one of your children or even a spouse. Did you know that in order to do any of these things, you need to own the car? Your title is what proves that you are the registered owner of the vehicle. This is when lost or stolen car ownership can suddenly become a very big problem. However, there is no need to stress as you can easily get a duplicate title.

In the state of South Dakota, anyone who loses or has their title stolen or damaged can obtain a duplicate title through the South Dakota Motor Vehicle Authority (MVD). This process can be done in person or by mail, whichever is more convenient for you. Title will only be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle or whoever is an authorized agent. Here are the required steps.

Personally

  • Be sure to complete the Application for a Duplicate Certificate of Ownership (Form MV-010) in advance. The form must be signed by all owners. In addition, it must be signed in front of a notary with their seal.

  • If your vehicle is seized, it must be signed by the mortgagee. Otherwise, there should be a bail release.

  • You will need to provide the current odometer reading for your vehicle. This applies to vehicles that are nine years old or less.

  • There is a $10 fee for the title.

  • All information may be forwarded to the South Dakota County Treasurer's office.

By mail

  • Follow all the same steps, turn on the board, and then send it to the following address:
