How to replace the AC pressure switch

The AC pressure switch protects the AC system from too high or too low pressure. Common signs of failure include a bad compressor or no AC power.

Air conditioning pressure switches are designed to protect the air conditioning system from too high or too low pressure. Both high and low pressure switches are available; some vehicles are only equipped with a high pressure switch, while others have both. Improper pressure can damage the compressor, hoses and other components of the air conditioning system.

An air conditioner pressure switch is a type of device called a sensor that changes internal resistance in response to a change in pressure. A clutch cycle switch measures the A/C pressure near the evaporator outlet and is often mounted on the accumulator. If incorrect pressure is detected, the switch will open the A/C compressor clutch circuit to prevent operation. After making the necessary repairs to bring the pressure to specification, the switch ensures normal operation of the clutch.

The most common symptom of an A/C pressure switch failure is a compressor not working and no A/C.

Part 1 of 3. Locate the A/C clutch shift switch.

To safely and effectively replace an air conditioner pressure switch, you'll need a few basic tools:

  • Free Repair Manuals - Autozone provides free online repair manuals for certain makes and models.
  • Protective gloves
  • Chilton repair manuals (optional)
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Locate the A/C pressure switch. The pressure switch can be installed on the pressure line of the air conditioner, compressor or accumulator/dryer.

Part 2 of 3: Remove the A/C pressure sensor.

Step 1: Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a ratchet. Then put it aside.

Step 2: Remove the switch electrical connector.

Step 3: Remove the switch. Loosen the switch with a socket or wrench, then unscrew it.

  • Attention: As a rule, it is not necessary to evacuate the air conditioning system before removing the air conditioning pressure switch. This is due to the fact that a Schrader valve is built into the switch mount. If you have any doubts about the design of your system, refer to the factory repair information before removing the switch.

Part 3 of 3. Installing the A/C Clutch On/Off Switch.

Step 1: Install the new switch. Screw in the new switch, then tighten it until it is snug.

Step 2: Replace the electrical connector.

Step 3: Reinstall the negative battery cable. Reinstall the negative battery cable and tighten it.

Step 4: Check the air conditioner. Once you're done, turn on the air conditioner to see if it works. Otherwise, you should contact a qualified technician to diagnose your air conditioning system.
