How to replace the A/C compressor relay

The A/C compressor relay supplies power to the compressor for AC operation. This relay should be replaced if it is proven to be defective.

Relays are used in many circuits in your vehicle. One of these circuits is the air conditioning compressor. The compressor has a belt-driven clutch that cycles on and off to keep your air conditioner running cool. This clutch is powered by a relay.

A relay is a simple device consisting of a coil and a set of contacts. When current passes through a coil, a magnetic field is generated. This field brings the contacts closer together and closes the circuit.

The ECU monitors the status of sensors in your vehicle to determine if conditions are right for the air conditioner to operate. If these conditions are met, the module will activate the A/C relay coil when the A/C button is pressed. This allows power to flow through the relay to the compressor clutch, turning on the A/C.

Part 1 of 2: Locate the A/C Relay

Required material

  • User's Guide

Step 1. Locate the air conditioner relay.. The A/C relay is usually located in the fuse box under the hood.

Refer to the user manual for the exact location.

Part 2 of 2: Replace A/C Relay

Necessary materials

  • Pliers
  • Protective gloves
  • Safety glasses

Step 1: Remove the relay. Remove the A/C relay by pulling it straight up and out.

If it's hard to see, you can gently use pliers to remove it.

  • A warning: Always wear safety goggles and gloves.

Step 2: Purchase a new relay. Write down the year, make, model and engine size of your vehicle and take the relay with you to your local auto parts store.

Having the old relay and vehicle information will allow the parts store to supply you with the correct new relay.

Step 3: Install the new relay. Install the new relay, aligning its leads with the slots in the fuse box, and carefully insert it.

Step 4: Check the air conditioner. Check the air conditioner to make sure it works. If so, you have successfully replaced the compressor relay.

The air conditioner compressor relay is a small part that plays a big role, like many parts of your car. Luckily, this is an easy fix if one fails, and hopefully replacing it will get your car's system back up and running. If your air conditioner still does not work, you should have a qualified technician check your air conditioning system.
