How to fill the windshield wiper reservoir

Driving with a dirty windshield is not only distracting, but can also make road travel difficult and dangerous. Dirt, grime, and grime can eventually stain your windshield to the point where driving becomes impossible. Maintaining a full tank of wiper fluid is important to keeping your windshield clean and to the safety of you and your passengers.

The windshield washer system is operated by a washer pump located at the base of the washer reservoir. When the driver activates a spring-loaded switch located on the steering column, it turns on the washer pump as well as the windshield wipers. Washer fluid is supplied through a plastic hose that goes to the windshield. Then the hose is divided into two lines, and the liquid is supplied to the windshield through nozzles located on the hood of the car.

Adding windshield washer fluid to your car washer fluid is a very simple job that will take no more than 10 minutes. In most modern vehicles, the warning light on the dashboard lights up when the washer fluid level is low. If the indicator lights up, you need to fill the tank as soon as possible.

Part 1 of 1 Filling the washer fluid reservoir

Necessary materials

  • trumpet
  • Windshield washer fluid - high quality, appropriate temperature

  • A warning: Make sure the wiper fluid is suitable for the conditions you will be driving. A windshield wiper designed for driving in warm weather may freeze in colder areas. Winter washer fluid usually contains methyl alcohol and is rated for a specific temperature range, such as fluid rated for -35F.

Step 1: Turn off the machine. Stop the vehicle, making sure it is parked on a level surface.

Step 2: open the hood. Release the hood latch and raise the hood using the hood support rod.

  • Functions: The hood release lever on most vehicles is located on the left side of the steering column. However, the location of this lever varies, so if you can't find it, check your owner's manual.

Once the hood is open, go to the front of the car and use your fingers to reach the center of the hood to find the hood release handle. When you find it, click on it to open the hood. Locate the hood support rod, remove it from the storage clip, and place the end of the rod into the support hole in the hood.

The hood should now stay up by itself.

Step 3: Remove the wiper cap. Locate the wiper reservoir cap and remove it. Install the lid in a secure location or, if it is attached to the tank with a leash, move it to the side so that the opening is not blocked.

  • Attention: In many cars, the windshield wiper reservoir is translucent, and the lid will have an image of water splashing on the windshield. In addition, the cap will often read "Washer Fluid Only".

  • A warning: Do not pour windshield washer fluid into the coolant reservoir, which may look like a windshield washer reservoir. If you're not sure which one is which, check the hoses. A hose comes out of the coolant expansion tank and goes to the radiator.

  • AttentionA: If you mistakenly put windshield wiper into the coolant overflow, do not attempt to start the vehicle. The radiator system must be flushed.

Step 4: Check Fluid Level. Make sure the tank is low or empty. Most windshield washer fluid reservoirs are transparent so you should be able to see if there is fluid in the reservoir. If the fluid level is less than half, it must be topped up.

  • A warning: The antifreeze or coolant reservoir can be confused with the windshield washer fluid reservoir. The best way to tell them apart is to look at the hoses. A hose comes out of the coolant reservoir and goes to the radiator. If you accidentally pour windshield wiper into the coolant reservoir, do not start the vehicle. The radiator will need to be flushed.

Step 3. Check the fluid level in the washer reservoir.. Most of them have marks on the tank indicating the liquid level. If the tank is empty or less than half full, it must be topped up. This is also a good time to visually inspect the tank and hoses for leaks or cracks.

If you find any leaks or cracks, the system will need to be checked and repaired.

Step 5: Fill up the tank. Fill the wiper reservoir up to the fill line. Do not fill the tank above the fill line. Depending on the location of the tank, you may need a funnel, or you may be able to pour liquid directly into the tank.

Step 6: Reattach the cap. Screw the lid back onto the tank, or if it is a snap-on lid, push it down until the lid snaps into place.

Step 7: Close the hood. Being careful not to hit your hand, close the hood. Release the hood when it is about 6 inches above the latch. This will protect your hands and ensure the hood closes tightly.

Step 8: Dispose of the e-liquid bottle. Properly dispose of the washer fluid reservoir so that remaining fluid cannot harm the area.

Step 9: Make sure the system is working. Check the wiper system. If wiper fluid does not come out when you press the washer lever, the problem is likely with the system itself. Have one of our certified mechanics inspect the entire system, including the motor and pump.

Checking the windshield washer fluid level is essential to keep your windshield clean and safe. Refilling the wiper reservoir is easy, but if you don't have time or the system doesn't work properly after you've filled the reservoir, one of our mobile mechanics will be happy to come to your home or office to inspect and adjust the parts. systems if necessary.
