A silent block, or a multi-metal hinge, is a small and inconspicuous detail. Silent blocks are part of the front or rear suspension and act as a cushion between the traction control arms, anti-roll bar struts, and the brackets to which all these elements are attached. The main function of the silent block is to take on all the vibrations and loads experienced by the suspension during movement. This is achieved by a layer of rubber or polyurethane between the silent block bushings.

Over time, silent blocks fail, the rubber bursts and can no longer perform its function. This is evidenced by the characteristic knock of the suspension. If you do not take action and do not replace the silent block, then the metal elements may be damaged, and their repair will cost large sums of money.

Replacing the silent block includes two main operations:

extraction of the old, worked out, hinge;
pressing a new silent block.

To do both of these operations, you will have to make some effort. The old hinge can also be removed with bare hands, if time has really not spared it. Also on sale are sets of tools for pressing and pressing silent blocks. Such a puller is selected for specific sizes and not all motorists can boast of having it. At the car service, they use just such tools.

If you see that the masters are going to carry out a replacement with a sledgehammer, then it is better to try to find another car service.

It is also worth noting that in order to replace the silent block, it will be necessary to completely unscrew the lever or rack, since it is very difficult to do all this work on weight, although you can not disassemble the suspension in the viewing hole. By the way, when you are already tightening the suspension, you can do this only when the car is on the ground, and not raised on a lift or on a jack. In the raised position, the levers are not at the same angle as in working condition. Accordingly, when the car sinks to the ground, the silent block rubber can twist and quickly become unusable.

After the seat has been vacated, it must be thoroughly cleaned of rust and rubber. It is necessary to thoroughly grind the inner surface so that there are no scratches or metal chips left, because it will be difficult to press in a new silent block. Then generously lubricate the inner surface of the eye with lithol, grease, silicone grease. You can also use machine oil or soapy water.

Pressing the silent block is easiest with a vice.

At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that it stands strictly perpendicular and enters the eyelet without distortions. If there is no vice at hand, then you can use an ordinary hammer, for example, pick up such a clip so that it matches the silent block clip in diameter, and press the hinge with precise strong blows. But if you do not calculate the impact force, then you can damage the silent block itself and the jet thrust lever and everything else.

A curious way is offered by experienced motorists, when the car itself acts as a press. That is, you are replacing silent blocks in the longitudinal steering rods. You remove the thrust itself, throw away the old silent block, smear the new and inner cavity of the thrust with nigrol or grease. Put a board under the car, on which you put the lever and the silent block, then smoothly lower the car on the jack, and the protruding suspension element will press the silent block.

As you can see, there are many ways to press silent blocks, but in some cases you can only use a special tool, for example, if the hinge does not have an external clip. In this case, it can only be installed using a special cone-like nozzle. There are also silent blocks with special technological recesses, they need to be installed only in a certain position, which can only be dealt with if you have tools.
