How to register a car in Indiana

All vehicles must be registered with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) in order to be legally driven. If you have just moved to Indiana, you must register within 60 days and this can be done in person or online through the MyBMV portal. Before you can register a vehicle, you must have an Indiana title in your name for the vehicle. After that, follow the same steps as Indiana residents.

If you purchased the vehicle from a dealer, the dealer will take care of all the paperwork regarding registration and ownership. In addition, they charge registration fees after you buy a car.

A car purchased from a private seller can be registered online after you complete the title deed application and the car has been purchased within the last 45 days. The vehicle can also be registered in person at the local BMV office and this must also be completed within 45 days.
