How to register a car in Texas

Moving to Texas provides a number of benefits. When you first arrive in the Lone Star State, you will need to take the time to make sure you are on the right side of the law. Registering the vehicle you drive in Texas should be high on your priority list. If you wait more than 30 days to get registered after you have moved to the state, you risk paying a late fee. You will need to visit the country's tax office to register your vehicle. Here is what you will need to bring with you to handle this process:

  • Proof that you have valid car insurance
  • Certificate that the vehicle has passed inspection
  • Title with your name on it
  • Completed Texas Title Deed Application
  • If you have a vehicle deposit, you will need to complete the Application for Registration Purposes Only form.
  • Payment of registration fees

If you are a Texas resident and have purchased a new or used vehicle, you will also need to register it. Here are the things you need to take with you as you try to get through this process:

  • Texas issued driver's license
  • Current auto insurance policy
  • Application for Texas Certificate of Title
  • Have the form of an inspection certificate

When you are about to register your car, here are the fees you can expect to pay:

  • Registration of cars and light trucks will cost $50.75.
  • Registration of vehicles with more than 6,001 miles will cost $54.
  • Registration of motorcycles and mopeds will cost $30.

Every two years, a vehicle must pass an inspection in order to be registered in the state of Texas. Certain counties in Texas will also require emissions testing. If you need more information about this part of the registration, be sure to visit the Texas DMV website.
