How to start a Prius

The Toyota Prius changed the game when it was first introduced in 2000. As one of the first commercially successful hybrid vehicles, it eventually helped launch an entire hybrid industry.

The hybrid engine wasn't the only new technology Prius introduced to the market: its ignition process is also different. The Prius uses a start button in combination with a special key that must be inserted into the slot before the car will start. There are different ways to start a car depending on whether it has a smart key or not.

If you've just bought a Prius, borrowed or rented one and are having trouble starting it, you've come to the right place. Below are step-by-step instructions for getting your Prius up and running.

Method 1 of 3: Starting a Toyota Prius with a Regular Key

Step 1: Locate the key slot in the car.. It looks a bit like a USB port, only bigger.

Insert the car key into the slot.

Be sure to insert the key all the way, otherwise the car will not start.

Step 2: Step on the brake pedal. Like most modern cars, the Prius will not start until the brake pedal is pressed.

This is a safety feature that ensures that the vehicle does not move when it is started.

Step 3: Firmly press the "Power" button.. This will start the Hybrid Synergy Drive system.

The message "Welcome to the Prius" should appear on the multifunction display.

You will hear a beep and the Ready light should come on if the vehicle is properly started and ready to drive. The Ready indicator is located on the left side of the car's dashboard.

The car is now ready to drive.

Method 2 of 3: Start Toyota Prius with Smart Key

The smart key allows you to keep the key fob in your pocket when starting the car or unlocking the doors. The system uses several antennas built into the car body to identify the key. The key case uses a radio pulse generator to identify the key and start the vehicle.

Step 1 Put the smart key in your pocket or carry it with you.. The smart key must be within a few feet of the vehicle to work properly.

There is no need to insert the smart key into the key slot.

Step 2: Step on the brake pedal.

Step 3: Firmly press the "Power" button.. This will start the hybrid synergic drive system.

The message "Welcome to the Prius" should appear on the multifunction display.

You will hear a beep and the Ready light should come on if the vehicle is properly started and ready to drive. The Ready indicator is located on the left side of the car's dashboard.

The car is now ready to drive.

Method 3 of 3: Starting the Toyota Prius without starting the Hybrid Synergy Drive engine.

If you want to use accessories such as GPS or radio without activating the hybrid synergy drive, use this method. It's similar to other ways to start the Prius, but there's no need to hit the brakes.

Step 1: Insert the key into the key slot. Or, if you have a smart key, keep it in your pocket or with you.

Step 2: Press the "Power" button once. Do not press the brake pedal. The yellow indicator should light up.

If you want to turn on all vehicle systems (air conditioning, heating, instrument panel) without turning on the Hybrid Synergy Drive engine, press the Power button again.

Now that you are well versed in how to start a Toyota Prius of all powertrains, it's time to get out and get behind the wheel.
