In this article, I will help you understand which circuit breakers are compatible with the Cutler Hammer.

As a certified electrician, I have experience in handling circuit breakers on a regular basis. Compatibility of circuit breakers is critical for any electrical work. The use of compatible jackhammer circuit breakers is mandatory to ensure the safety of the circuit and electrical appliances; improper execution may result in an electrical fire.

Generally, the following circuit breakers are compatible with the CB Breaker:

  • Low voltage circuit breakers – popular in residential and commercial applications – fall into two categories: molded case circuit breakers and miniature circuit breakers.
  • Medium voltage circuit breakers - used at 120V and 240V for medium levels.
  • High voltage circuit breakers - serve as a protective device for the transmission and distribution of electricity.
  • Thermal circuit breakers - also called overload circuit breakers, found in almost all circuit breakers.
  • Magnetic circuit breakers are an upgraded replacement for conventional circuit breakers.
  • Eaton, Square D, Westinghouse and Cutler Hammer circuit breakers are compatible.

Cutler hammers are outdated and the task of finding compatible circuit breakers is no easy task. However, the information below will help you find compatible circuit breakers.

Low voltage circuit breakers

Low voltage circuit breakers are very popular. They are found in various residential apartments, houses and commercial buildings.

Low-voltage circuit breakers can protect an entire circuit or an individual electrical appliance from power or voltage surges.

There are two categories of low voltage CBS, MCCB and MCB.

MCCB - molded case circuit breaker

MCCBs are used in any environment. They prevent the adverse effects of short circuits, earth faults and thermal overloads through thermomagnetic and electromagnetic mechanisms.

Circuit Breakers - Miniature Circuit Breakers

MCB and MCCB are similar in almost every aspect and application. However, the main difference lies in their capabilities. Check below:

Current - rated up to 100 amps

MCCB

Rated current - up to 2500 amperes

Medium voltage circuit breakers - MVCB

Medium voltage circuit breakers are used for 120 and 240V for medium level applications.

They are also common and can be found anywhere from home wiring to office wiring. In addition, mid-level circuit breakers are found in railway power lines.

High voltage circuit breakers

These circuit breakers are used as safety devices and are more common in power transmission and distribution/distribution.

They protect power lines from ongoing faults and damage, imbalances and any other possible failures in power transmission and distribution.

Thermal Circuit Breakers - Thermal CB

Thermal switches are found in most circuit breaker boxes. They are also called overload circuit breakers, fuses, and thermal trip circuit breakers. They function to cut off the flow of current at a given temperature. They consist of a metal strip to which several pieces of metal are welded.

Magnetic circuit breakers

Magnetic switches are a modern replacement for the original circuit breakers.

They show impressive technological performance and are state of the art. They use a multi-dimensional electromagnetic coil that constantly changes polarity. And they are also compatible with cutting hammer.

Eaton circuit breakers

Below are identical switches with different nameplates; hence they are all compatible and can be used interchangeably despite different names.

  • Westinghouse
  • Square D
  • Eaton
  • Hammer for knives

However, despite the similarity of jackhammer models, it is still necessary to use accurate models.

The Eaton jackhammer is compatible with the Cutler-Hammer on all models. It is extremely important to know that the Cutler-Hammer is not compatible with any Siemens model. Murray jackhammers, on the other hand, are identical and can be used with a Cutler-Hammer.

Experiments show that you can use Siemens and Murray switches interchangeably. However, Murray and Square D switches work the same way. In addition, they are durable and easy to install. Another advantage is that they are reliable and safe.

Functions of circuit breakers

All circuit breakers are designed to protect electrical circuits and transmission lines in various forms such as fuses. The switch automatically disconnects the power supply from the circuit when the power is turned off. Thus, damage to home equipment and wiring is reduced.

The circuit breaker then remains open until overload conditions are restored.

Alternatively, operators can manually reset overhead conditions using a small button on the switch.

Technical features of Cutler Hammer and other circuit breakers

Before you start looking for a circuit breaker that is compatible with your hammer, you need to understand the various terms and properties of circuit breakers. Ignorance of these definitions is detrimental to circuit breaker wiring and operators.

The following are the main specifications of circuit breakers that you should know:

You must know the voltage requirements of your circuit breaker before you even consider purchasing a compatible circuit breaker.

Various circuit breakers operate within specified limits. Exceeding these limits may cause the circuit to malfunction. Therefore, voltage math and integration are vital characteristics to consider before choosing a circuit breaker. They ensure that the cutting hammer or any other circuit breaker is supplying sufficient power to the equipment or appliances. (1)

Current Rating or Amps

The higher rated current in the circuit breaker helps compensate for the effects of overheating in the electrical circuit or power system.  

In the event of an electrical failure, most fuses heat up. However, they must be heated within acceptable limits. If they exceed the allowable level, they may open and damage the circuit or device.

In contrast, circuit breakers do not get very hot when electrical faults occur. Consequently, they often close without even gaping or opening, even if the power surge is large.

However, I suggest that you choose a circuit breaker for about 120 percent of the required load.  

Moisture and corrosion

You need to protect your cutting hammer or any other circuit breaker from moisture, which can eventually corrode your breaker. This way, your device will perform optimally.

Treat the circuit breaker with lubricants, rust inhibitors, or mold treatments to ensure best performance. (2)

Conductive contact plates CB and Cutler Hammer Compatibility

Make sure the replacement circuit breaker is compatible with your hammer blade panel. All blade hammer replacement switches have two conductive plates; stationary and movable or mobile conductive plates.

The stationary conductive plate is called the busbar and the movable plate is known as the trip busbar. The busbar carries 120V DC (DC) and the trip bar carries 24V DC. The trip bar is attached to the circuit and trips, tripping the circuit breaker if it is overloaded or damaged.

Summing up

Cutler hammer switches, despite being old, still have compatible circuit breakers which are quite hard to find. So, whenever you want to replace or add circuit breakers to your hammer blade panel, choose from any of the available options described in this guide. Make sure you understand the voltage and amperage ratings of your cutting hammer before looking for a replacement circuit breaker, as faulty or incorrect amperage and voltage ratings can compromise your circuit components.
