The telescopic handles of the loppers can be extended to increase the height the lopper can reach.
For example, a 665 mm (26 in.) lopper unstretched can reach 955 mm (37½ in.) when extended. This gives the significant benefit of more height and more leverage and no extra storage space.
Lopper ratchet
The ratchet mechanism consists of a round toothed gear and a pivoting spring-loaded pin known as a "pawl".
When the handles of the ratchet lopper are closed, the gear turns counterclockwise, allowing the pawl to easily slide over the sloping edges of the tines.
If the handles begin to open again, the gear turns clockwise causing the pawl to catch on the vertical edges of the teeth and prevent further opening of the lopper handles.
This allows you to gradually cut the stems and branches. Each time the handles of ratchet loppers are closed and a cut is started, the ratchet prevents them from reopening, allowing the user to cut in small increments rather than all at once.
This minimizes stress on the wrist and is ideal for those with limited strength or ability.
When the user wishes to open the handles, a button is pressed to release the latch, allowing the gear to rotate freely.
Ratchet loppers are sometimes referred to as PowerGear loppers.
Lopper with pruning saw
Some loppers come with pruning saws attached, allowing the user to cut branches that cannot be cut with the lopper without having to purchase an additional tool.
