What problems can arise when twisting?
Doweling can be a complex process as it requires constant precision.
It's easy to make mistakes, but don't delay! Being aware of potential problems can help you avoid them during your dowel installation project.
Drilling | |
uneven holesIf you find that the holes you are drilling are not perfectly round, your drill is probably not straight.
Once the drill becomes bent, it will need to be replaced as it can no longer drill holes accurately.
uneven seamIf you find that your joint is not joining properly or the two pieces of wood you are joining are not properly aligned, the problem might be with how you drilled the holes.
If the dowel holes are not drilled at a 90 degree angle to the surface of the wood, the pieces of wood being joined will not fit properly and you will be able to see your dowels in the gap.
If so, then you need to take the joint apart, check which piece of wood was not drilled correctly, and replace it with a new piece of wood with properly drilled holes. You may need to restart the connection from scratch.
Displaced joint | |
If the edges of your joint don't line up, it's likely that your dowel holes were not drilled correctly in the second piece of wood.
The fix is a little easier. You can do this by taking the joint apart and re-drilling the holes in the correct location. See additional recommendations. How to accurately align tongue and groove joints.
Gluing | |
cracked woodThe connection with a pin can sometimes lead to cracking of the wood. This is usually due to the so-called hydraulic pressure.
Hydraulic pressure occurs when something pushes against a fluid that is already in an enclosed space. The pressure exerted on the liquid is then transferred to the material containing it.
Additional pressure on this material can cause it to rupture at any weak points. For example, wood will break along the grain.
This can be avoided by using grooved or grooved dowels, or by cutting notches into plain dowels so that the adhesive can come out of the joint. This can also be avoided by drilling a hole 1mm wider than the dowel you are going to use. |
