There are two main types of universal keys and control cabinet keys, one with fixed heads and the other with swivel heads.
Fixed head utility and control cabinet keys
Fixed head auxiliary keys and control cabinet keys are the traditional type of key set.
They are made from a single piece of solid metal and have one, three or four legs with a different style of head at the end of each.
Sometimes they have a head on one or both sides of the hub.
Swivel head utility and control cabinet keys
Swivel service and cabinet keys have a plastic frame on which two-headed metal parts are installed, turning on axes inserted into the frame.
This mechanism makes the tool more compact and versatile as it can have two heads per foot.
Heads can be adjusted for use at any angle, unlike fixed heads.
Rotary service and cabinet keys are not limited to the "spider" shape with fixed protruding legs and can be of much more convenient design. They may also include non-key features in the instrument: for example, some models include a voltage detector.
