What fluids need to be checked and refilled in the spring?

General cleaning in the car is already a ritual of Polish drivers. No wonder - winter is a really hard time for a car. Snow, frost, slush, sand, salt are conditions that cause a faster consumption of working fluids. Therefore, when the sun comes out from behind the clouds and spring comes on the calendar, you should roll up your sleeves and check the condition of the working fluids in the car.

Machine oil

Liquid that the most frequently mentioned, in the spring season it is machine oil... And it's good because its winter consumption is indeed much higher than usual... This is due to low temperatures, high humidity and condensation on engine parts. When do you need to change the oil 100%? Back when you use mono-grade oil. Winter liquids on their own very fluid. This works very well in cold weather as it is ideal for cold starts. The problem arises when the air temperature starts to rise. In this case, the viscosity of the oil is too low to adequately protect the engine.

What about all-season oils? The case looks a little better and not so urgent. Doubling the value of multigrade oils provide very good flow properties at low outside temperatures, and when they start to rise, the fluid retains sufficient viscosity to provide adequate engine protection.

Should you change your multigrade oil in spring?

Does this mean that you should not change all-season oil in the spring? No. As we mentioned earlier, in winter, oil is consumed much faster. We often travel short distances by car, so all moisture cannot evaporate from the oil, making it its properties deteriorate significantly... Moreover, under the engine oil filler cap mucus can build upwhich is a consequence of mixing oil with water. In this case be sure to replace the fluidand also make sure the head gasket is intact.

And if you are not planning on changing your oil because you think your oil is still in good condition, remember to check the fluid level regularly - after all, the engine is the heart of the car, so you need to take care of it!

Transmission oil

Gearbox oil is a minor issue. Although we hear about changing and checking engine oil from almost every angle, in the case of a gearbox, this topic is neglected. You can even come across statements that changing the oil in the gearbox is prohibited.... This myth must be fought. Each oil wears out over time and loses its properties. And the oil in the gearbox really does important things: it lowers the coefficient of friction, cools it, softens the impact of the gears, dampens vibrations and protects against corrosion. It is recommended that this fluid be changed after at least 100 kilometers. km. However, you must check its level from time to time, otherwise we risk expensive repairs. It is best if, when checking the oil in the gearbox, we go to a car workshop, because access to the filler neck is often difficult and a professional hand is required.

Coolant and washer fluid

Coolant protects against overheating of the cooling system, as well as against its wear. Moreover, it minimizes the formation of deposits. Its condition should be checked once a month and refilled if necessary. If the boiling point of the fluid is too low in spring and summer, the cooling system will not be able to efficiently remove heat from the engine at high air temperatures, as a result, the pressure rises sharply, which can lead to the destruction of system components.

What about washer fluid? This spring should be replaced. There are two types of this fluid available on the market: summer and winter. The summer smell is much nicer, and most importantly: copes with greasy stains much better.

Taking care of the correct level of working fluids is the responsibility of every driver. This should be done especially after the winter period, when our car was in very difficult conditions. Low fluid levels or running out of fluids can lead to component failure and costly replacements.
