What oil to fill in the BMW E90 engine

If the question is relevant for you, what oil should be added to the BMW E90 and E92, how much, what intervals and, of course, what tolerances are provided, then you have come to the right page. The most common engines of these cars are:

Gasoline engines

N45, N46, N43, N52, N53, N55.

Diesel engines

N47

About tolerances What tolerance must be observed? There are 2 of them: BMW LongLife 01 and BMW LongLife 04. The approval with the designation 01 was introduced for use in engines developed before 2001. (not to be confused with released ones, since many engines developed in the 2000s were installed before 2010.)

LongLife 04, introduced in 2004, is considered relevant, and as a rule, people looking for oil in the BMW E90 are guided by it, but this is not entirely correct, since this standard allows the use of oil in all engines developed since then. 2004, but most of the units installed on the E90 are “fed” with oils with a tolerance of 01, and this should be guided by.

It should also be noted that in Russia, on the recommendation of BMW, the use of products with BMW LongLife-04 approvals in gasoline engines is not allowed. So the question for owners of PETROL engines should go away by itself. This is due to the low quality of fuel in the CIS countries and the aggressive environment (harsh winters, hot summers). Oil 04 is suitable for diesel engines, especially those produced in 2008-2009.

What oil to fill in the BMW E90 engine

How much oil is in the engine (volume)

How many liters to fill?

  • 1,6–4,25 l
  • 2,0 - 4,5 liters.
  • 2.0D — 5.2l.
  • 2,5 and 3,0 l — 6,5 l.

Tip: stock up on another 1 liter of oil, since the oil consumption of BMW E90 cars is about 1 liter per 10 km, this is absolutely normal, especially for gasoline engines. So the question in the category why do you eat oil should only be a concern if the consumption is more than 000-2 liters per 3 km.

What type of oil to fill in the N46 engine?

Use engine oil approved by BMW LongLife 01. Part number 83212365930. Or equivalents listed above.

What is the replacement interval?

We recommend that you follow the replacement interval once a year, or every 1-7 km, whichever comes first.

Self-changing BMW E90 oil

Warm up the engine before starting the oil change procedure!

1. Using wrench 11 9 240, remove the oil filter cover. Additional characteristics of the key: diameter? dm., edge size 86 mm, number of edges 16. Suitable for engines: N40, N42, N45, N46, N52.

2. We are waiting for the oil to flow from the filter into the oil pan. (Engine oil can be removed in 2 ways: through a dipstick hole designed to measure the oil level in the engine, using an oil pump, which can be found at a gas station or service station, or by draining the crankcase).

3. Remove/install the filter element in the directions indicated by the arrow. Install new o-rings (1-2). Lubricate the rings (1-2) with oil.

4. Unscrew the plug (1) of the oil pan. Drain the oil. Then replace the spark plug o-ring. Fill in new engine oil.

5. We start the engine. We wait until the oil pressure warning lamp in the engine goes out.

The engine has an oil dipstick:

  • Park your car on a level surface;
  • Turn off the power unit, let the machine stand for about 5 minutes. You can check the oil level;
  • Add oil if necessary.

The engine does not have a dipstick:

  • Park your car on a level surface;
  • Wait for the engine to warm up to operating temperature and let it run at 1000-1500 rpm for 3 minutes;
  • Look at the engine oil level on the gauges or on the control screen;
  • Add oil if necessary.

How to check the oil level BMW E90

  1. Press button 1 on the turn signal switch up or down until the corresponding icon and the word "OIL" appear on the display.
  2. Press button 2 on the turn signal switch. The oil level is measured and displayed.
  1. The oil level is ok.
  2. The oil level will be measured. This process can take up to 3 minutes when stopped on level ground, and up to 5 minutes while driving.
  3. The oil level is minimum. Add 1 liter of engine oil as soon as possible.
  4. Too high level.
  5. Defective oil level sensor. Don't add oil. You can drive more, but make sure that the newly calculated mileage is not exceeded until the next service

The transmission needs maintenance too!

In Russia and other CIS countries, there is an erroneous opinion related to the fact that the oil in the automatic transmission does not need to be changed, they say that it is filled during the entire period of operation of the car. What is the lifespan of an automatic transmission? 100 kilometers? 000 kilometers? Who will answer this question.

That's right, nobody. The deliverers say one thing (“filled for the entire period”, but they don’t specify the period), the neighbor says something else (says that he has a friend who “changed the oil in the box, and it clogged after that, of course, if the problems have already begun, then they are irreversible and oil is not a solution). We want to draw your attention to the fact that scheduled maintenance of an automatic transmission extends the life of the transmission by 2 or even 3 times.

Most automotive companies do not manufacture automatic transmissions, but instead install units from global transmission manufacturers such as ZF, JATCO, AISIN WARNER, GETRAG and others (in the case of BMW, this is ZF).

Therefore, in the records accompanying their units of these companies, it is indicated that the oil in the automatic transmission must be changed every 60-000 km. There are even repair kits (filter + screws) and a specialized oil called ATF from the same manufacturers.
