Which 55 inch TV should you choose?

Buying a new TV is certainly an exciting time, so it's no wonder you want to pick the best model available. Are you wondering which 55 inch TV to buy? In our article, you will learn which models to choose and how the individual models differ.

Which 55 inch TV to buy, LED, OLED or QLED?

LED, OLED, QLED - the mentioned abbreviations look similar, which can confuse the buyer. How are they different and what do they really mean? What do they mean when choosing a 55-inch TV? These markings, in a simplified form, refer to the type of matrix installed in this device. Contrary to appearances, they share more than common, and each has its own important features:

  • 55" LED TVs - this name refers to an updated version of the once popular LCD panels, which were illuminated by CCFL lamps (i.e. fluorescent lamps). In LED TVs, they have been replaced by LEDs that emit light independently, from which the technology gets its name. Standard LED arrays (Edge LED) are edge models, i.e. with a screen illuminated by LEDs from below, usually below. This results in noticeably higher brightness at the bottom of the screen. To solve this problem, manufacturers have focused on installing a panel that is evenly flooded with LEDs (Direct LED), which, in turn, makes the TV thicker.
  • 55-inch OLED TVs – in this case, conventional LEDs have been replaced with organic light emitting particles. Instead of a panel with LEDs in the cross section of the TV, you can see a whole bunch of thin layers that, under the influence of current, begin to glow. Therefore, they do not require backlighting, which provides a very large color depth: for example, black is very black.
  • 55-inch QLED TVs - This is an upgraded version of LED matrices. Manufacturers have retained the LED backlight, but have changed the technology of "production" of pixels. We described the whole process in detail in the article “What is QLED TV?”.

However, in short: the appearance of colors is due to the use of quantum dots, i.e. nanocrystals that change the blue light falling on them into RGB primary colors. These, passed into the color filter, give access to an almost infinite number of shades of colors. The advantage of 55-inch QLED TVs is an extremely wide color gamut and, thanks to LED backlighting, excellent image visibility even in very bright rooms.

55 inch TV - what resolution to choose? Full HD, 4K or 8K?

Another important issue concerns the choice of resolution. This means the number of pixels displayed on a given screen for each horizontal row and column. The more of them, the more densely they are distributed (on a display with the same dimensions), and therefore much less, i.e. less noticeable. For 55-inch TVs, you will have a choice of three resolutions:

  • TV 55 caliber Full HD (1980 × 1080 pixels) - a resolution that will definitely give you satisfactory image quality. On a screen with such a diagonal, you don’t have to worry about blurry frames, in the case of a larger Full HD (for example, 75 inches), this may not be enough. The smaller the display, the larger the pixels become (at the same resolution, of course). Also keep in mind that in the case of Full HD, for every 1 inch of screen, there is 4,2 cm of screen distance from the sofa in order for the image to be clear. Thus, the TV should be at a distance of about 231 cm from the viewer.
  • 55" 4K UHD TV (3840 × 2160 pixels) - the resolution is definitely more recommended for 55-inch screens. It offers an even higher concentration of pixels in a single line while maintaining the same screen dimensions, resulting in higher image quality. Landscapes become more realistic, and characters are reproduced perfectly: you forget that you are watching a digital version of reality! You can also place the TV closer to the sofa: that's just 2,1 cm per inch, or 115,5 cm.
  • 55" 8K TV (7680 × 4320 pixels)) - in this case, we can already talk about a truly captivating quality. Keep in mind, however, that there isn't much content streaming in 8K these days. However, this does not mean that buying a 55-inch 8K TV is a waste of money! On the contrary, it is a very promising model.

Everything points to the fact that consoles and games will soon be adapted to such a high resolution, even the first videos on YouTube appear in it. Over time, it will become a standard, like 4K. In this case, in this case, only 0,8 cm of distance per 1 inch is sufficient, i.e. The screen can be up to 44 cm away from the viewer.

What else should I look for when buying a 55-inch TV?

The choice of matrix and resolution is the absolute basis for choosing the right screen. However, when it comes to choosing a 55-inch TV, there are some additional details to consider. Be sure to read the technical data of the models you are interested in and make sure:

  • Energy class – the closer to the letter A, the better, because you will pay less for electricity and have less impact on environmental pollution. All this thanks to the energy efficiency of the equipment.
  • Smart TV – A 55-inch smart TV is the standard these days, but to be sure, check if the model has this technology. Thanks to this, it will support many applications (like YouTube or Netflix) and connect to the Internet.
  • Screen shape - it can be completely straight or curved, the choice depends on your comfort.

Before buying, you should compare at least a few TVs with each other in order to choose the best and most profitable from the whole offer.
