It is definitely very difficult to answer the question of which gasoline is better - 95th or 98th. There are many factors to consider here, but most drivers still prefer to listen to the recommendations of manufacturers.

The technical documents for the car usually indicate the recommended gasoline and the permissible one, and as a rule it is written that it is recommended to fill in A-95, but A-92 is acceptable.

How to figure it out here?

First of all, you need to recall what this octane number is. The octane number tells us that this brand of gasoline ignites and detonates at a certain compression ratio. The higher this number is, the more compression is needed.

There are entire correspondence tables that indicate the degree of compression in the engine of a particular machine, and based on these data, one can come to the following conclusions:

• A-98 is suitable for engines with a compression ratio above 12;
• A-95 - 10,5-12;
• A-92 - up to 10,5.

If you look at the technical characteristics of many popular cars today, we will see that the A-92 will suit a large number of models: Chevrolet Aveo, Renault Logan, Toyota Camry - this is only a small part of those models whose engine compression ratio does not reach 10. Almost all Chinese vehicles can easily "eat" the A-92, since their engines are built on the basis of obsolete Japanese units.

It is also important to analyze the quality of the gasoline itself.

It's no secret that many gas stations sell fuel of not the highest quality, the octane number is increased by adding various additives to the base (usually A-92, if not A-80). After using such gasoline, a lot of combustion products are formed, which gradually destroy your engine.

That is, the answer suggests itself - if it is permissible to use the A-92 for your specific model, then it is better to refuel with it than with the “diluted” A-95, from which you will only have continuous problems over time.

Numerous tests show that the use of gasoline with a lower octane number does not lead to such critical consequences - the dynamic characteristics of acceleration and maximum speed, of course, decrease by some fraction of a second, but in general, engine power and consumption remain within normal limits.

It is a completely different matter if you fill your car with a brand of gasoline that is not acceptable for it. For example, if in a Volkswagen Passat, the compression ratio in the cylinders of which is 11,5, you fill in A-95 instead of A-92, then the consequences will quickly affect:

• the fuel-air mixture will detonate earlier;
• shock waves will pass along the walls of the cylinders and pistons;
• overheating of the engine;
• accelerated wear;
• black exhaust.

The engine may even stall - sensors that prevent additional detonation will simply block the fuel supply. Although one refueling with such gasoline will not be able to completely disable the unit, but if you constantly try to save money in this way, you will have to spend money on expensive diagnostics and repairs.

If you do the opposite - fill in A-92 gasoline instead of the permissible A-98, then nothing good will come of it - a higher octane number needs higher temperatures and compression, such gasoline burns longer and releases more heat. Possible breakdowns: burnt valves and piston bottoms, early engine wear.

It is worth paying attention to the fact that older car models are even more or less tolerant of such changes in octane number. For example, many drivers in the VAZ nines fill in either the 95th or the 92nd. The car endures all this steadfastly, although standard “sores” may appear more strongly - it stalls at idle, or starts to smoke at speed.

For more modern port injection injectors, the requirements are much more stringent. That is, if it is written on the tank hatch, RON-95, then it is better not to experiment.

Moreover, there may be recommendations regarding the chemical composition of gasoline: leaded, unleaded, with the minimum allowable content, sulfur, lead, aromatic hydrocarbons, and so on.

Based on the foregoing, the following conclusions can be drawn:

• if the octane number is not increased due to additives, then there will be no fundamental difference in the quality of gasoline;
• for a particular model, the most suitable gasoline is the one indicated on the tank cap;
• switching from low to higher octane and vice versa can adversely affect engine performance, especially if you often fill in the wrong gasoline.

We also do not forget that Russia has adopted the Euro-5 standard, according to which fuel must meet a number of criteria. If after refueling at one or another gas station with the engine there were problems, you can complain about the owner of the gas station to the consumer rights protection fund.
