Which BMW convertible is best for me?

If you love the feeling of wind in your hair and sun on your face while driving and you want a premium car with the latest technology, the BMW Convertible could be the car for you.

From sporty two-seaters to practical four-seaters, with fuel-efficient diesel models, high-performance options and even a plug-in hybrid, BMW offers you a wider selection of convertibles than almost any other car brand.

Here is our guide to BMW convertibles to help you find the right one for you.

How many convertibles does BMW make?

As of 2021, BMW produces three convertible models - the 4 Series, 8 Series and Z4. In this article, we'll also look at the older 2 Series Convertible that was produced until 2021, the 6 Series that was produced until 2018, and the i8 Roadster that was produced until 2020.

Which BMW convertibles have 4 seats?

If you want a convertible top that allows you and three friends to make the most of the sun, consider the BMW 2 Series, 4 Series, 6 Series or 8 Series because they each have four seats.

At BMW, the larger the number in the name, the larger the car. The 2 Series is the smallest, and even has room for two adults in the back (although they might be a bit happier on long weekend trips in one of the bigger cars). 6th and 8th series are the largest convertibles; Series 8 replaced Series 6 in 2018.

Which BMW convertibles have 2 seats?

The Z4 and i8 Roadster have two seats and are both sports cars, but that's where the similarities mostly end. At Z4 the engine is located in front under a long cowl, and seats are most shifted back.

The i8, by contrast, has eye-catching styling and keeps the engine behind the seats. It's not particularly practical as a family car, but it's a lot of fun to drive and makes every trip an event. It's also one of the most environmentally friendly sports cars you can buy because it's a zero-emission plug-in hybrid for over 30 miles.

Are BMW convertibles practical?

The 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th series are more practical than many similar cars because they have rear seats that adults can sit in - in some four-seater convertibles, the rear seats are not very comfortable for adults, but that's not the point. bmw case.

You also get a decent amount of trunk space in every BMW convertible. You might not be able to cram unassembled furniture into them, but long shopping trips and week-long vacations shouldn't be a problem. Be aware, however, that there is less space in the trunk when the roof is folded down, especially in hardtop vehicles.

What is the most luxurious BMW convertible?

As you'd expect from premium vehicles, the interior of every BMW convertible looks great, even if you opt for the entry-level SE model. Indeed, if you swap your BMW sedan for one of the convertibles, you won't notice any difference in quality or performance. Of course, the bigger the car, the more luxurious it is, and the top-of-the-line 8 Series is the most luxurious BMW convertible you can buy. It is supremely comfortable and equipped with all the high-tech features that BMW has to offer.

What is the fastest BMW convertible?

No BMW convertible is slow, and you don't have to look far to find models with very powerful engines that make overtaking effortless. The fastest are the "M" models, which are produced by a first-class team of engineers for special characteristics. The M4, M6 and M8 (based on the 4, 6 and 8 series) can go almost as fast as BMW racing cars. If speed is your thing, the M8 is incredibly fast thanks to the powerful V8 engine.

Why did BMW stop making hardtop convertibles?

BMW 4 Series models sold from 2014 to 2020 and Z4 models sold from 2009 to 2017 have a metal and plastic "hard" roof instead of the soft fabric roof used in most convertibles.

Hardtop convertibles were popular in the early 2000s because with the top up they provide about the same level of quietness, warmth and safety as a sedan. This is great because thanks to the British weather, most convertibles drive with the roof up most of the time. However, hard tops are very heavy, reducing fuel economy, and very unwieldy when folded, reducing trunk space. Fabric roof designs have improved to the point where a hardtop no longer has a real comfort advantage, which is why BMW switched to soft tops for the latest 4 Series and Z4.

Overview of BMW convertible models

BMW 2 Series Convertible

It's BMW's smallest convertible yet the 2 Series remains a very comfortable and practical machine. Running is surprisingly economical, especially if you have a diesel model that can get you as much as 60 mpg. At the other end of the scale are the high performance and very fast M235i and M240i models.

BMW 4 Series Convertible

The 4 Series combines the agility and responsiveness of the smaller 2 Series with almost the same room and luxury as the larger 6 and 8 Series. It is available with the same wide range of engines as the 2 Series, from efficient diesels to very powerful petrol engines, including the extremely fast M4. Vehicles sold from 2014 to 2020 have a hardtop; the version sold since 2021 has a fabric roof.

BMW 6 Series Convertible

The 6 Series was sold until 2018 as BMW's first-class luxury convertible. Its comfort and technology suite is at the level of any luxury sedan, and it has enough room for four adults. It's easy to drive and especially good on long journeys - diesel models can go over 700 miles on a single tank of fuel. Or, if speed is your thing, you might prefer the power of the mighty M6.

BMW 8 Series Convertible

Series 8 replaced Series 6 when it launched in 2019. The two cars are similar in that they are large, luxurious four-seaters, but the 8 Series is packed with the latest technology and engineering to make driving even more enjoyable. You can choose from a diesel or gasoline engine, including the super-fast M8's large and very powerful gasoline engine.

BMW Z4 Roadster

The Z4 is a two-seater sports car that feels fast and agile to drive. However, it's as quiet and comfortable as any of BMW's sedans when you just want to get from point A to point B. There's no diesel option, but the 2-litre petrol engine is amazingly efficient, and 3-litre models, to say the least. , fast. . Models sold from 2009 to 2017 have a hardtop, while the version sold from 2018 has a softtop.

BMW i8 Roadster

The futuristic i8 is unlike any other car on the road. But it's more than just style - it's also the most efficient BMW convertible you can find because it's a plug-in hybrid. It can give you up to 134 mpg and has a zero-emissions range of up to 33 miles, which can easily cover most everyday commutes. It's also very fast and a pleasure to drive, but it's the least practical car on our list. It only has two seats and the engine is behind them, so there isn't much room in the trunk for your luggage.
