Which motorcycle chain lubricant: comparison

Since the introduction of O-ring chains on the market, the service life of chain drives has increased significantly. However, this does not relieve you of certain maintenance work from time to time, because the lubrication of the motorcycle chain is necessary to ensure its longevity.

The question arises: What kind of motorcycle chain lubricant should I use? To choose the right one, you need to consider the following points: viscosity, additives and properties.

Different types of motorcycle chain lubricants on the market

There are three types of lubricants on the market: tube lubricant, spray oil, and automatic lubricators.

Motorcycle chain lubricant

Tube lubricant is very popular because it is very viscous and sticks easily. If you lubricate chain kits for a long time, it won't get better. Keep in mind, however, that this type of lubricant has more than just advantages. Because, thanks to its high adhesion and viscosity, it also traps dirt very easily. If you choose your tubing lubricant accordingly, you must adhere to the following few rules to obtain satisfactory lubrication:

  • Flush the chain kit before lubricating.
  • Apply lubricant to hot chains.
  • Turn the wheels by hand to allow the grease to enter the small clearances.

Motorcycle chain lubrication: oil spray

Like pipe fat spray oil is very easy to apply. It has a cannula, which, in combination with its great fluidity, allows it to be applied in the smallest spaces. Plus, it's less sticky and less sticky so it doesn't trap dirt. Unfortunately, the lack of viscosity is not always an advantage. Because the grease is very good and comes off very quickly. Several washing sessions, driving in the pouring rain, and the chains will need to be lubricated again.

Foam oil is much thicker and provides better grip, but simply displaces the next grease for a few days. Therefore, the oil in the fuel is ideal for regular or even daily use.

Automatic motorcycle chain lubricator

An automatic lubricator is a system that, as the name suggests, automatically lubricates sets of chains. And this is thanks to the reservoir, which regularly dumps drops of oil. This is very good compromise between grease tube and spray oil... It combines fluidity, therefore low dirt adhesion; and excellent resistance to bad weather and external aggression.

In other words, you don't have to repeat the experience every 3 days under the pretext that it was raining or that the motorcycle was washed. As long as there is oil in the tank, there is no need to intervene. And this is the only task that you have to perform: check the tank from time to time, top up if necessary.

There are drawbacks, of course. First, the cost of the tank, which is especially high. By installing an automatic lubrication system, you also risk voiding the manufacturer's warranty. To be sure, take the time to find out the brand of your motorcycle.
