What torque level should I choose?
There is no simple answer to the question “what torque level should I choose?” because different applications require different amounts of torque. The level of torque required will depend on a number of factors:
Screw diameter and length
Screwing in a screw with a larger shank diameter and longer length will require more torque than a shorter, thinner screw.
Material type | ||
Drilling or screwing into tough materials such as metals and hardwoods will require more torque than materials such as softwoods or plastics. For example, if you are drilling a hole to install a retractable clothesline, the torque level you will select will be lower if you place it on a wooden post compared to a brick wall.
Whether you are drilling a pilot hole
If you drill a pilot hole first, then less torque will be required when you start to screw in the screw or use a larger bit.
