Which Mercedes-Benz SUV is best for me?

With over 100 years of reputation as a manufacturer of high-tech luxury vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is one of the most coveted automotive brands. That reputation was built on sedans, but Mercedes-Benz now has a wide range of SUVs that are even more desirable than sedans.

There are eight Mercedes SUV models in a variety of sizes: the GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS and G-Class, as well as the EQA and EQC electric models. With so many to choose from, determining which one is right for you can be tricky. Here we answer some important questions to help you make your decision.

What is the smallest Mercedes-Benz SUV?

All but one Mercedes SUV has a three-letter model name, with the third letter indicating the size. The smallest of these is the GLA, which is similar in size to other compact SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai. It's also about the same size as the Mercedes A-Class hatchback but offers more practicality and a higher seating position. There is a purely electric version of the GLA called the EQA, which we will cover in more detail later.

Next up is the GLB, which, unusually for a relatively small SUV, has seven seats. It is similar in size to competitors such as the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Its third-row seats are a little cramped for adults, but it might be perfect if you need more room than the GLA and don't want the car to be as big as other seven-seat Mercedes SUVs.

What is the largest Mercedes SUV?

You may have noticed that the third letter in the name of each Mercedes SUV model corresponds to the name of the brand's non-SUV models. You can get an idea of the size of a Mercedes SUV by looking at an "equivalent" SUV. GLA is equivalent to A-class, GLB is equivalent to B-class, and so on.

Following this diagram, you can see that Mercedes' largest SUV is the GLS, which is the equivalent of an S-class sedan. It is a very large vehicle at 5.2 meters (or 17 feet), which makes it even longer than the long-wheelbase version of the Range Rover. Its luxurious interior has seven seats and a huge trunk. Its main competitor is the BMW X7.

Downsizing, the next biggest model is the GLE, whose main competitor is the BMW X5. In addition, there is a GLC in the same size as the Volvo XC60. The GLE is equivalent to the E-class sedan, while the GLC is equivalent to the C-class sedan.

The exception in the lineup is the G-class. This is the longest-running Mercedes-Benz SUV model, and much of its appeal lies in its retro styling and exclusivity. It sits between the GLC and GLE in size, but costs more than either of them.

Which Mercedes SUVs are seven-seat?

If you're looking for the extra flexibility of a seven-seat SUV, there's plenty to choose from in the Mercedes lineup. Some GLB, GLE and GLS models have seven seats in a three-row 2-3-2 arrangement.

GLB is the smallest seven-seat model. Its third-row seats are best for children, but adults of average height will fit if you slide the second-row seats forward. It's the same in the larger GLE.

If you regularly travel with adults in all seven seats, you need a big GLS. Every passenger, including third-row passengers, will have a place to rest, even if they are tall.

Which Mercedes SUV is best for dog owners?

Every Mercedes SUV has a large trunk so you can find the right one for your dog, no matter how big it is. The trunk of the GLA is large enough for Jack Russells, for example, and St. Bernards should be perfectly happy in the back seat of the GLS.

But not everyone who has a larger dog like a Labrador wants a big car. In this case, the GLB may be perfect for you and your dog, as it has a very large trunk for its relatively compact size.

Are there hybrid or electric Mercedes SUVs?

Plug-in hybrid versions of the GLA, GLC and GLE are available. The petrol-electric GLA 250e has a range of up to 37 miles with zero emissions, and its battery is fully charged in less than three hours from an electric vehicle charger. The GLC 300de and GLE 350de are diesel-electric plug-in hybrids. The GLC has a range of up to 27 miles and can be fully recharged in 90 minutes. The GLE has a much longer range of up to 66 miles and takes about three hours to recharge.

Some petrol-powered GLC, GLE and GLS models have mild-hybrid power that Mercedes calls "EQ-Boost". They have an additional electrical system that helps reduce emissions and fuel consumption, but doesn't give you the option to use electric power alone.

There are two purely electric Mercedes SUVs: the EQA and the EQC. EQA is the battery powered version of the GLA. You can tell them apart by the EQA's different front grille. It has a range of 260 miles. The EQC is similar in size and shape to the GLC and has a range of up to 255 miles. Mercedes is expected to release the EQB - an electric version of the GLB - by the end of 2021, and more electric SUV models are in the brand's development.

Which Mercedes SUV has the largest trunk?

It's no surprise that Mercedes' largest SUV has the largest trunk. Indeed, the GLS has one of the largest trunks of any car you can get. With all seven seats, it has more luggage space than many midsize hatchbacks, with 355 liters. In the five-seater version, the volume of 890 liters is sufficient to easily fit a washing machine. Fold down the second row seats and you have 2,400 liters of space, more than some vans.

If you need a big trunk and the GLS is too big for you, the GLE and GLB also have huge luggage space. The GLE has 630 liters with five seats and 2,055 liters with two seats. Five-seat GLB models have 770 liters with the rear seats folded and 1,805 liters with the rear seats folded (seven-seat models have slightly less room).

Are Mercedes SUVs good off-road?

Mercedes SUVs are more focused on luxury comfort than off-road ability. This does not mean that they will get stuck in a muddy puddle. The GLC, GLE and GLS will go further across rough terrain than most people will ever need. But their ability pales in comparison to the G-Class, which is one of the very best off-road vehicles capable of tackling the toughest terrain.

Do all Mercedes SUVs have all-wheel drive?

Most Mercedes SUVs are all-wheel drive, as indicated by the "4MATIC" badge on the back. Only the lower power versions of the GLA and GLB are front wheel drive.

Which Mercedes SUV is best for towing?

Any SUV is a good vehicle to tow, and Mercedes SUVs don't disappoint. As the smallest model, the GLA has the smallest payload capacity of 1,400–1,800 kg. The GLB can tow 1,800-2,000kg and all other models can tow at least 2,000kg. Some GLE models, as well as all GLS and G-Class models, can pull 3,500kg.

Are there Mercedes sport utility vehicles?

Besides electric models, there is at least one sporty, high-performance version of every Mercedes SUV. They are sold as Mercedes-AMG vehicles and not as Mercedes-Benz vehicles as AMG is a high-performance sub-brand of Mercedes.

Although taller and heavier than similar high-performance sedans, Mercedes-AMG SUVs are very fast and feel great on a winding country road. The two-digit number in the name of the car indicates its speed: the larger the number, the faster the car. For example, the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 is (slightly) faster and more powerful than the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53.

Mercedes GLB

GLB is one of the most compact seven-seater SUVs. Its extra seats can be really helpful if your family is starting to feel cramped in a five-seat car, but adults will feel cramped in the GLB's third-row seats. In five-seater mode, its trunk is huge.

Mercedes GLC

Mercedes' most popular SUV, the GLC combines the comfort of a luxury car with high-tech features, and enough room for a family of four. You can choose from two different body styles - a regular tall SUV or a low, elegant coupe. Surprisingly, the coupe practically does not lose in terms of practicality, but it costs more.

The big GLE is great for large families who want the comfort and high-tech features you'd expect from a luxury car at the price of a premium car. Mercedes GLS

Mercedes' largest SUV provides the level of space and comfort of a limousine for seven people, even if they are very tall. It has the most advanced Mercedes technology, the smoothest engines and a gigantic trunk. There's even a Mercedes-Maybach GLS that's as luxurious as any Rolls-Royce.

Mercedes G-Class

The G-Class isn't Mercedes' biggest SUV, but it's considered a top class model. The latest version has been on sale since 2018; the previous version has existed since 1979 and has become an automotive icon. The latest version is brand new but has a very similar look and feel. It's great off-road and very practical, but its main attraction lies in its retro design and luxurious interior.
