What car should I buy?

Modern cars are safer and more efficient than ever and come with all sorts of useful features, so how do you choose the one that's right for you? Chances are you could buy any car Cazoo has in stock and be perfectly happy with it, but buying a car is a big commitment and it pays to make sure you get one that suits your needs, lifestyle and tastes.

Think carefully about what you really need and want from a car. Think about where you are going to ride it and how you are going to use it. Whether you're an "empty house" swapping out your big station wagon for something sportier or more economical, or a family that needs extra space for baby number 3, it's important to buy the perfect car, not one that will just be work. Job.

Where do you mainly drive?

Think about the kind of trips you take. Most of us only average a few miles per day, and if you rarely travel outside of the city, a small city car like the Hyundai i10 might be ideal. Their small size makes it very easy to park or crash into traffic jams, and they cost very little to run.

If you mainly do longer, faster rides, you'll need something bigger, more comfortable, and more powerful. For example, the BMW 5 Series. Such cars feel calm and safe on motorways, which makes the trip more relaxed. As a rule, these are excellent family cars.

If you live in a rural area, you may need a taller car that gives you a better view of winding back roads. Four-wheel drive can also be a bonus because it can make driving safer on muddy or icy roads. In this case, an SUV like the Land Rover Discovery Sport may be just what you need.

Do you carry a lot of people?

Most cars have five seats - two in the front and three in the back. Large family cars have enough room for two adults to sit comfortably in the back, but three can get a little snug. If you want to bring friends of your children or grandparents with you for a walk, you will need a second car. Or you can get one of the many seven-seat minivans and SUVs. These are three rows of seats, usually in a 2-3-2 pattern, with a third row that folds from the trunk floor.

Seven-seat cars give you space and flexibility not found in regular family cars. Most of them have a third row of seats that can be folded down or removed altogether to give you a huge cargo space and still leave room for five people, so you can customize the layout to suit your needs.

While third-row seats in more compact seven-seat cars like the Toyota Verso are best for short trips, seats in larger cars like the Ford Galaxy and Land Rover Discovery are spacious enough for adults even on long trips.

Do you wear a lot?

If you need to pack a lot of gear on your trip but don't want a van or pickup truck, there are plenty to choose from. Station wagons, for example, come in different sizes, but always have a much larger boot than a hatchback or sedan of the same car. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate and Skoda Superb Estate give you twice the trunk space of some midsize hatchbacks, for example, and the roominess of a van when the rear seats are folded down.

Due to their tall, boxy bodies, SUVs usually have large trunks. Compact models like the Nissan Juke may not be spacious enough for some families, but mid-sized models like the Nissan Qashqai are very practical, and large SUVs like the BMW X5 have huge trunks. If you need maximum luggage space, you should also consider minivans like the Citroen Berlingo. Not only are they great for carrying large numbers of people, their tall, wide bodies can hold a huge amount of party luggage or sports gear.

Do you want something eco-friendly?

Most cars use gasoline or diesel fuel. But there are other options if you want something less polluting and perhaps more economical to run. An electric vehicle (also known as an EV) like the Renault Zoe is an obvious choice. But you have to think carefully about where you will mainly drive your car and where you will charge it, especially if you make a lot of long trips. And since EVs are still in the minority, you may not find one that's perfect for your lifestyle or budget.

Hybrid vehicles offer a useful point between petrol and diesel vehicles and electric vehicles. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (also known as PHEVs) like the Mitsubishi Outlander go a lot further than electric "self-charging" hybrids and can let you make the most of your trips without an engine. But it's still there if the battery dies, so you don't have to worry about range. However, you will need to charge your PHEV regularly to get the most out of it.

Do you have a limited budget?

A car is the second most expensive thing people buy, after a house or apartment. But this does not mean that you need to spend a lot of money to buy a good car. The most affordable cars, like the Suzuki Ignis, tend to be small. But there are also family cars like the Fiat Tipo and SUVs like the Dacia Duster.

Other things to think about

There are many other factors that can influence your decision to buy a car. For example, you might have a short driveway so you need to make sure you get the right car. You may have a large caravan and need a vehicle powerful enough to tow it. You might want a sporty little room for the weekend. Or maybe you take something if it has a sunroof. And don't forget the place for the dog. Considering all of these things will help you narrow down your options and make sure you find a car you like.
