Kangaroo - the common name for armored personnel carriers in the armies of the Allies during World War IIThe armored personnel carrier has been produced since 1942. The basis for its creation was the medium tanks of the M3 and M4 series, from which the undercarriage was borrowed almost unchanged. In the front sheet of the control compartment, two flaps with viewing slots that fold upwards are mounted, which are held horizontally with the help of racks in the stowed position. The fighting compartment has been converted into a landing squad, which can accommodate up to 15 fully armed soldiers. A 12,7-mm anti-aircraft machine gun turret was mounted above the landing squad. The power compartment and transmission correspond to the base tanks that served as the basis for the creation of an armored personnel carrier. The Continental air-cooled carburetor engine was used as a power plant, a five-speed mechanical gearbox was used. In the undercarriage, a rubber-metal caterpillar 406 mm wide was used, which ensured a relatively small average ground pressure equal to 0,7 kg / cm2. The armored personnel carrier was originally intended to escort heavy self-propelled artillery installations (transportation of part of the crew and ammunition), but has also found application for the transportation of motorized infantry. Its feature was extremely powerful armor protection for an armored personnel carrier - 38-50 mm.
