Kerosene KT-1. Specifications

Features of the composition and properties

Regulatory requirements that govern the production and use of KT-1 kerosene are given in GOST 18499-73. This document defines technical kerosene as a combustible substance used either for production purposes or as a semi-finished product for the production of other hydrocarbon compositions.

Kerosene KT-1. Specifications

Technical kerosene KT-1 is produced in two categories of quality - the highest and the first. The differences between them are shown in the table:

Parameter nameUnitNumerical value for technical kerosene
first categorysecond category
Distillation temperature rangeºС130 ... 180110 ... 180
Density at room temperature, no moret / m30,820Not regulated, but verified
Limit sulfur content%0,121,0
The highest content of resinous substances%1240
Flash pointºС3528

GOST 18499-73 also establishes the norms for the corrosion resistance of products in technical kerosene, as well as indicators of ash content and acidity. When used as a detergent, components containing fat-soluble salts of magnesium or chromium are introduced into the composition of kerosene KT-1. They increase the electrostatic resistance of processed products.

Kerosene KT-1 is also used as an additive to traditional diesel fuel, which is used in the summer.

Technical kerosene KT-2

Grade KT-2 is distinguished by a low content of aromatic hydrocarbons, therefore it has a less pungent odor and can be used to clean moving parts of process equipment. Additives contained in kerosene grade KT-2 help to reduce oxidative wear. Its main indicators - ash content, flash point, density - are higher than for kerosene grade KT-1.

Another feature of technical kerosene KT-2 is the ability to freeze at lower temperatures, so it is more often used as an additive to winter grades of diesel fuel than KT-1.

Kerosene KT-2 is in demand in the chemical industry, at enterprises that produce ethylene and its derivatives by the pyrolytic method. The KT brand was also widely used in the ceramic industry and in the manufacture of refractory materials, porcelain and faience products. In all of these cases, the high energy content of kerosene and its ability for the most complete combustion at high ambient temperatures are used.

Storage conditions

Like other brands of kerosene - TS-1, KO-25, etc. - technical kerosene KT-1 and KT-2 is demanding on the conditions of its storage. GOST 18499-73 limits the storage period to one year, after which, in order to determine the suitability of technical kerosene for use, additional tests are needed. Note that during storage, technical kerosene is able to delaminate and form mechanical impurities, and the content of resinous substances in it increases.

The room in which sealed containers with technical kerosene KT-1 or KT-2 are stored must be equipped with serviceable fire extinguishers (foam or carbon dioxide fire extinguishers), have serviceable electrical fittings and constantly operating supply and exhaust ventilation. It is necessary to work indoors with personal protective equipment and using only spark-proof working tools.
