KIA Sorento 2.5CRDi EX

There is no need to look for the reasons for this in a magnifying glass. It is true that the Sorento was produced in 2002, but now it has undergone a major overhaul that changed its appearance (new bumper, chrome mask, different wheels, headlights behind cleaner glass ...). So much so that the Kia SUV still looks sleek-sporty-off-road.

There are also new items in the interior (better materials, other meters), but the essence is in the updated technology. The Koreans have made significant progress, including by complying with the Euro 4 standard under the hood. Already known

The 2-liter four-cylinder turbo diesel has 5 percent more power as well as more torque, now 21 Nm. In practice, 392 "horses" turn out to be a very healthy herd, which can also make Sorenta a participant in the first attack on the highway. It easily develops a speed of 170 kilometers per hour, and in the sales catalogs, some brilliant data on acceleration from zero to 180 km / h (100 seconds) seem to be a typo after a practical experiment.

The feeling is that the distance to 100 km / h passes in less than 12 seconds. The updated unit in no way gives a feeling of malnutrition and convinces you to accept it as your own. Also because of the torque that comes in handy when towing a trailer (the Sorento among the experts) and when driving up (in mud, snow or completely dry) uphill. While the engine is still one of the loudest, it makes up for it with good flexibility. In the Sorrento test, there was another novelty in the configuration - a five-speed automatic transmission.

For a gearbox that runs without sixth gear on the highway (less thirst, less noise!), Autoshift is not a problem as the response times are appropriate. It's the same with manual gear changes, where the delay between the command and the actual gear change is perfectly acceptable. Regarding creaks or misunderstandings, since the gearbox doesn't match the driver's wishes (eg when overtaking), this area also seems to have a neat loft for the Sorento. He only has one bad partner: the suspension.

While both the dampers and springs have been dedicated to the upgrade, the Sorento still puts stress on asphalt bumps and, with the indirect steering wheel adjustment, gives you courage, especially on level ground. It acts as a decent vehicle around the corners, but it's not a race, which the driver and passengers can learn about after a few quicker corners, in which the Sorento leans more than most of the competition. However, in terms of handling it is better than that of a much younger competitor.

You can also turn off the ESP system, which is quick to react and sometimes quite noticeably corrects the direction of travel of the Sorento. We especially recommend it on an open rubble track or cart, where the mentioned soft-adjustable suspension turns out to be very welcome. Driving on dirt roads is still convincing. The rest of the techniques are more or less known and tested: four-wheel drive with a gearbox, and it is also possible to buy a rear differential lock.

In the interior of the test Sorrento, an electronically adjustable driver's seat, power accessories (shifting all four side windows and mirrors), heated front seats, a leather package, dual-zone air conditioning, cruise control, a Kenwood audio-video system with Garmin navigation were installed. . Some shortcomings remain. For example, only a height-adjustable steering wheel, a protruding external antenna causing a duel of branches, and an on-board computer that the Sorento still has but is in a less suitable location, next to the reading lights and turned on. the main thing is that it is not scattered by the data: no average value, no current consumption, shows “only” the range with the remaining amount of fuel in the tank, the direction of movement (S, J, V, Z) and data on the average movement speed.

The Sorento is not an SUV where you can sit in muddy boots and toss Saturday's catch in the trunk. The interior is too upmarket for something like this, and the trunk is too well thought out. A separate opening of the trunk lid (even with a remote control!) Designed to fill a not very large trunk with products. The rear seat splits at a one-third:two-thirds ratio and folds into the ground to provide a flat-bottom expandable boot. The Koreans seem to have thought of Sorrento passengers as there is plenty of storage space, a lockable box in front of the passenger, and two goggle compartments above the heads of the front passengers. The button also opens the filling cap.

evaluation

  • With new competitors that have already been and will be on the market, the update is quite logical. The Sorento has a fairly powerful turbo diesel engine, a solid automatic transmission, outperforms some competitors with better off-road support, its price tag is still solid (albeit not cheap), and its comfort has improved. Competitors should be wary of Sorent's successor!
