Kia Sportage Estate 2.0i 16V

The upgrade was pretty straightforward on the Kia. They took the regular Sportage model as a basis, widened its rear by 315 millimeters and thus got a very useful volume of the luggage compartment. Unlike the regular Sportage, the Wagon stores the spare wheel in the lower luggage compartment, not in the tailgate.

An additional consequence of the expansion is, of course, an increase in the base volume, which is now 640 liters. This volume can be increased to a whopping 2 cubic meters by additionally folding the backrest (halved) and folding the entire bench. Driving a car with such an enlarged trunk, you will get additional entertainment.

The folded bench moves awkwardly and hits the front seats or luggage due to instability during acceleration and braking. Needless to say, the harder you brake, the harder you hit.

Speaking of bumps, let's focus on bumps in the road or ground under the wheels. Namely, they are unfavorably transferred to the interior because of the rigid suspension. However, an additional consequence of the chassis rigidity compared to other SUVs is the slight incline when cornering. ... until you download it. At that time, the transfer of irregularities from the road becomes more bearable, and at the same time, of course, the inclination of the body increases.

Despite all the changes that the Sportage made during the "conversion" to the station wagon, the good old Sportage is still in use. With the automatic locking rear differential, all-wheel drive and transmission, you get out of the many holes and up even steeper inclines.

In addition to the unchanged chassis, the well-known five-speed (slightly inaccurate) manual transmission also remains in the ranks, and the 2-liter four-cylinder with 0-valve technology is also still very thirsty and noisy, as we recall from the otherwise Sportege. The latter is also evidenced by the measured values of noise and fuel consumption, which averaged about 15 liters of fuel. Consumption, even in the best case, did not drop below 13 liters per 3 kilometers. The reason for such values lies mainly in the backwardness of the unit design (the four-valve technology itself is not yet an indicator of progress) and the relatively large weight of the car (bad one and a half tons), which require their own tax.

Even within us, we are greeted by the familiar working environment of other Sportages. As such, cheap materials continue to dominate, such as hard plastic on the dashboard, seat covers from cheap merchandise, and not-so-decent workmanship. In addition, there is a can holder on the front, which obscures the view of the watch during use and makes it difficult to access some switches (air conditioning, internal air circulation and heated rear window), including even a switch to turn on all four direction indicators. ...

Speaking of hidden switches, we can't do without rear wiper and rear fog lamp switches. Both are mounted on the dashboard under the gauges behind the wheel. At least the fog lamp switch is on, which cannot be said of the rear wiper switch, so you have no choice but to feel it at night.

While driving, you will definitely notice the shaking of the interior rearview mirror as you listen to music louder. This is due to low tones (such as drums during music) that spread across the roof from the rear speakers when they are retracted (embedded) into the ceiling in front of the luggage. And when it comes to luggage, we cannot ignore the fact that the car does not have a shelf or luggage compartment cover to hide the contents of the rear.

You can order it additionally, but, in our opinion, such a very desirable and especially necessary item from the point of view of safety could be part of the almost traditionally Korean standard equipment. It features a six-speaker car radio, ABS, two front airbags, air conditioning, power steering, all four power windows and central locking (no remote control, unfortunately). We must not forget about the "backpack", which can be filled with a large amount of luggage.

For a wagon equipped in this way, your bank account will be debited by the agent in the amount of just under 4 million tolar. So, if you're not overly sensitive to some of the Wagon's downsides, and the ease of use and the ability to carry a lot of luggage means a lot more to you, and you enjoy dealing with even more challenging terrain, we definitely recommend buying.

evaluation

  • In addition to all the existing disadvantages and advantages, the "modified" Sportage received a new advantage: a useful large trunk. Or in other words, an SUV for people with large luggage.

We praise and reproach
