King Kong Cannon: the pickup truck that could cause trouble for the Ford Maverick

Great Wall Motor Company has released the 2022 King Kong Cannon, a crew cab pickup truck that produces 195 horsepower. The Chinese-origin pickup could be a strong competitor to trucks like the Ford Maverick, given its starting price of approximately $15,650.

"King Kong Cannon" is perhaps the best name ever given to a truck. We have a market full of names of prehistoric lizards, ancient Roman fighters and US states, so why not add a giant fictional gorilla to them? Chinese automaker Great Wall Motors announced its new pickup truck this week, and it may have the best name ever.

What is a King Kong Cannon?

Great Wall Motors' King Kong Cannon is a crew-cab pickup truck that's larger than a midsize truck but smaller than a 4x4. Australian company Drive said the van is an inch long, but not as wide as the . It has a small bed and does not support much weight. For markets outside the US, size and capacity are not as important.

We still don't have all the information about the car. What we do know is that it can carry a 1,102-pound payload and has two engine options. Both are 2.0-liter turbo engines, but one is petrol and the other is diesel. Each of the machines produces 195 and 164 horsepower, respectively.

How much does it cost?

Although nothing official has been announced yet, Chinese media are speculating on the cost of the truck. The 2022 King Kong Cannon will start at 100,000 15,650 yen (roughly dollars). A full-size truck without full-size capabilities isn't exactly what people want. But who wouldn't try a truck with such a cool name for such a low price?

If this truck made it to the United States, it would be the cheapest truck on the market. Trucks like the Ford Maverick are pre-ordered in huge numbers due to its low cost, so the King Kong Cannon might be a good fit too. However, the difference is definitely the capacity. Trucks, like the much more capable ones, are several thousand dollars more in America.

Will the King Kong Cannon be available outside the Chinese market?

The exact answer, whether the truck will be available elsewhere, is unknown. However, there is speculation that it may soon reach Australia. The country is often known for buying cars from the Chinese market, so this won't be the first time. Drive said it's "not yet confirmed," though it's hoped a better-named pickup truck will make it inside.

As for entering the US market, the chances are unlikely. There is little reason for Chinese automakers to import cars into the United States unless they are rebranded. US citizens know the brands of their cars and generally do not buy cars from lesser known manufacturers. If you're from North America and want to get your hands on the King Kong Gun, you'll probably have to fly around the world.

While the King Kong Cannon isn't as powerful as its name suggests, it's a decent truck for the price. Since you won't need to come to America and race heavy, off-road trucks, you don't have to worry. Great Wall Motors knows its demographic, which is less interested in powerful trucks.
