Chinese Electric Car NIO: Wants to Implement 4,000 Car Battery Replacement Stations Worldwide by 2025

Electric vehicle charging networks continue to expand around the world. However, Nio, a Chinese electric vehicle company, is looking to bet on battery replacements with more than 4,000 exchange stations around the world.

Chinese car manufacturer Institute of Oceanography According to a recent Reuters report, it's the only company that has had real success with battery replacements and doesn't plan to stop there anytime soon.

Nio aims to become a leader in the electricity sector

Institute of Oceanography plans to have 4,000 battery change stations worldwide by 2025According to a brief report citing President Nio, Qin Lihun. Company it also plans to have 700 exchange stations operational by the end of the year..

On July 9, 2021, NIO unveiled "NIO Power 2025", a battery replacement station deployment plan. By the end of 2025, NIO will have over 4,000 NIO battery replacement stations around the world, of which about 1,000 will be outside of China. Read more:

The speed of battery replacement makes it potentially useful for charging, but it highlights that Nio sees it as part of a long-term strategy, even as public charging networks, including its own subsidized charging, continue to expand.

Nio aims to expand beyond China

Nio said it completed its 500,000th battery replacement in China last year. The automaker recently selected Norway as its first market after China, and that includes battery replacements.

This progress contrasts with the failures of previous battery replacement attempts. Better Place was a well-funded startup that tried to replace a battery in Israel 10 years ago but quickly fell through due to cost and logistics issues. After a brief hype, Tesla quietly retired its battery swap system, with some claiming it was only there because of the zero-emissions car loans generated by the project.

What will this system be like in the United States?

IN USA, a large number of chargers will be needed to support the goals of electric vehicles. While the battery swap has a potentially faster response time, the cost of installing a few hundred in the state if the Nio makes it to the US might not matter much.

Nio is not the only one who sees battery replacement as part of a model that can help others, such as apartment dwellers or taxi companiesto overcome some logistical hurdles.

Renault's CEO recently said there are "potential benefits" to battery swapping, and California-based startup Ample is aiming to revive battery swapping on a larger scale with a series of car adapters.
