Unlike the Shenyang J-15, a copy of the Russian Su-33, the Chengdu J-20 looks like an idea taken from… American engineers. J-20 is a self-supporting high-wing aircraft with two engines.

The J-20 uses an aerodynamic system commonly known as a "canard" in which a positive-lift canard is located in the nose forward of the wings behind the cockpit.

It is not clear which engines were used in the J-20. The estimated weight of the aircraft is about 40 tons. The length is 23 m, and the span is 13 m. The flight of the new machine was made on January 11, 2011, at the controls of the aircraft was Colonel Liang Wanjun, a pilot who had previously participated in the work on the Chengdu J-7, JF-17 Thunder and Chengdu J-10 .
