A Chinese tank fits your HiLux and Ranger: the GWM Tank 300 ute arrives with epic retro style

The Tank 300 will have a ute-based sibling that will have the same retro styling.

The GWM Tank 300 looks set to be a ute-based sibling that will share its retro styling, and new photos of the heavily camouflaged truck being tested in China emerge.

The Tank 300 is in many ways similar to the GWM Ute, also known as the Cannon, but looks like a completely different product with a boxy, retro design more reminiscent of a Jeep Wrangler.

But both the Tank 300 and its older brother the Tank 600 appear to have been converted into trucks, both heavily camouflaged.

The Tank 300-based Ute will have the same specifications as its SUV, which is 4760mm long, 1930mm wide, 1903mm high and has a 2750mm wheelbase.

It also promises to be an off-road ace with 224mm of ground clearance and approach and exit angles of 33 and 34 degrees respectively, better than the GWM Ute (27 and 25 degrees) and Ford Ranger Raptor (32.5 and 24 degrees).

You can also expect it to share a powertrain with the 300, which at launch includes a 2.0kW, 167Nm turbocharged 387-litre engine, but a new 135kW, 480Nm diesel engine is rumored to be added soon.

Short-range 4WD with multiple driving modes will also appear, as will the Tank 300 12.3-inch widescreen infotainment system.

The Tank brand is almost entirely tied to Australia as Great Wall has already imported 300 for evaluation purposes, having already trademarked Down Under.
